Beyoncé just released her eighth studio album, “Cowboy Carter,” act number two of her ongoing trilogy, and fashion is once again a big part of the album rollout and promotion. The album is a bold exploration and reclamation of the country genre from an artist whose roots run deep in the American South. Consisting of 27 tracks, it isn’t just as a musical endeavor but as a statement piece, going into Beyoncé’s personal history with the broader narratives of country music and its African-American influences. It addresses criticisms of her belonging within the country genre, while simultaneously pushing the boundaries of what country music can be.

MUSIC

The cover is done by Parkwood Entertainment, a production company established by Beyoncé herself. Creative direction is done by Andrew Makadsi, with the photography being a collaborative project of Frederik Heyman and Blair Caldwell.

Featuring collaborations with country legends like Dolly Parton and Willie Nelson, alongside a diverse array of genres blending into its country base, “Cowboy Carter” stakes Beyoncé’s claim within the genre. The album also acts as a cultural bridge, opening up country music to a broader audience while spotlighting the contributions of Black artists to the genre. By melding various musical styles with traditional country elements, Beyoncé continues her efforts to reclaim and redefine Americana through a Black lens, offering a nuanced dialogue on identity, belonging, and the complexity of American music history.

Fashion is once again a big part of the album rollout and promotion. Before announcing the album, she hinted the theme by wearing checkered leather Louis Vuitton jacket and shorts with a Stetson chapeau to the 2024 Grammys. On social media, a few days before the album release, Beyoncé posted her full denim cowboy look, that is likely to set the tone for the era. The ensemble marries high fashion with Western motifs, featuring a cropped Marine Serre jacket with distinctive patchwork denim and the brand’s signature moon motif, alongside high-waisted Y/Project jeans accented with innovative diagonal cut-outs. She accessorizes this double denim statement with a wide-brimmed cowboy hat and an American flag. The look is completed with a bold red lip, a chunky silver necklace, and a denim Balenciaga bag embroidered with LGBTQ+ flags, bringing all the elements together to define her own version of Americana. As her new musical era unfolds, it looks like the fashion statements from Beyoncé are also on the horizon!
