Sun Yitian‘s collaboration with Louis Vuitton for their Women’s Prefall 2024 collection is the luxury brand’s another involvement of contemporary visual art into it’s design. This partnership is Sun Yitian’s debut collaboration with a luxury fashion house. Known for her photorealistic paintings of toys and everyday objects, Sun Yitian elevates these seemingly mundane items, challenging perceptions of value and mass production. Her work for Louis Vuitton gives the Prefall collection a youthful and whimsical spirit, through vibrant designs and playful motifs that stretch across clothing, leather goods, and accessories.
In this collection, Sun Yitian imagined a series of toy-like animals that bring a sense of fun and fantasy to the sophisticated silhouettes of Louis Vuitton’s ready-to-wear line. Characters such as a pink rabbit, yellow duck, and a cheerful leopard are printed and transformed into three-dimensional forms on various items. For instance, a petal pink coat features a grinning leopard, and a sky-blue hooded windbreaker is decorated with the profile of a duck.
The collaboration also creatively reimagines Louis Vuitton’s iconic bags. The ‘Animogram’ series sees the standard canvas enlivened with images of the playful menagerie. Notable pieces include the Alma bag in Epi calfskin featuring a zebra, and the On The Go tote in reverse varnished calfskin with a duck and its shadow. Each animal is paired with a bag shape that complements its features, further highlighted by matching animal coin purses like the glossy white Monogram leather Noé paired with a rabbit coin purse.
Expanding beyond textiles and leather goods, the collaboration extends to footwear and accessories. The animal motifs pop up on several shoe styles, including Monogram nylon mules and the Louis open back sneakers, where they appear as leather patches or playful lace accessories. Furthermore, the entire collection of animals is beautifully rendered on the Carré 90 scarf, with each animal highlighted against a graphic Louis Vuitton border.
Lastly, Sun Yitian also introduces three limited-edition Louis Vuitton perfumes—Spell on You, Imagination, and Heures d’Absence—each with a charming animal motif linked to the scent’s character.
