Vacheron Constantin introduced the Les Cabinotiers Solaria Ultra Grand Complication – La Première, a one-of-a-kind wristwatch designed and built over eight years. The piece integrates 41 watchmaking complications into a white gold case measuring 45mm in diameter and 14.99mm thick. Powered by the newly developed Calibre 3655, which includes 1521 components, the watch brings together long-standing areas of expertise at the Maison, from chiming mechanisms to rare astronomical displays.

WATCHES

The watch’s 41 complications span timekeeping, calendar functions, celestial indications, and acoustic engineering, with five astronomical functions featured together for the first time in a wristwatch. Among them are sidereal time, solar time, sunrise and sunset indicators, and zodiacal positioning. Their combination reflects Vacheron Constantin’s interest in astronomy and time measurement, seen in earlier works such as the Celestia Astronomical Grand Complication 3600 (2017) and The Berkley Grand Complication (2024).

One of the watch’s key technical components is a Westminster minute repeater, developed with seven patent applications. Tuned to produce the four-note melody heard from London’s Big Ben, the complication demonstrates the brand’s continued refinement of acoustic mechanisms. Precision in tone, rhythm, and spacing has been a longstanding challenge in watchmaking, and the integration of this feature into such a compact form continues that research.

Vacheron Constantin has a long history with grand complication watches, including pocket watches produced in the early 20th century. The 1929 piece made for King Fouad I of Egypt, containing 13 complications, marked a historic moment in this field. The development of Solaria builds on this tradition but does so in a format suitable for the wrist and designed with attention to visual balance and legibility.

Aesthetically, the watch is double-sided, with functions distributed across both faces for clarity. Despite its technical density, the design prioritises clean visual organisation. The finishes, ranging from polished scales to engraved motifs, align with Vacheron Constantin’s broader standards in craftsmanship. While highly complex, the watch remains wearable, with proportions and display choices that support its practical and visual functions.

Marking 270 years since Jean-Marc Vacheron signed his first apprenticeship contract in 1755, the Les Cabinotiers Solaria Ultra Grand Complication – La Première reflects the Maison’s continued interest in developing technically demanding pieces with long development timelines. This particular watch is a part of a wider release but instead exists as a unique object, consistent with the Les Cabinotiers department’s approach to making individual commissions and highly specialised works.
