Women’s Air Jordan 1 High OG Ruby Drops May 31

Inspired by ruby gemstones, the release features cracked Varsity Red leather and classic 'Bred Toe' color blocking

The Air Jordan 1 High OG Ruby arrives just in time to mark a major moment for Jordan Brand: four decades of influence in sport and style. Designed exclusively for women and launching on May 31 for $180, the sneaker turns to the symbolism of the ruby gemstone to reflect this anniversary. The design draws clear visual influence from the Air Jordan 1 High “Bred Toe” of 2018, but pushes the look forward with tactile finishes and fine detailing.

The upper mixes three key colors: Varsity Red, White, and Black. Red lands across the toe box, heel, and ankle flaps, finished in a cracked texture that gives off a ruby-like glint. That texture sets the tone for the pair, moving away from flat color blocking into something more sculptural. The cracks in the leather create reflections that shift with light, giving dimension to each step. It’s a change from smoother leather seen on previous editions and helps the sneaker stand out among a long line of Jordan 1s.

White leather panels along the midfoot keep the base neutral, making room for contrast on the black overlays. These include the forefoot area, the eyestays, the Swoosh, and collar. A rubberized black Wings logo adds depth on the lateral collar, while the tongue features a woven Nike Air label in Varsity Red. Together, these accents maintain the recognizable features that define the Air Jordan 1 silhouette.

The color blocking pattern is familiar to Jordan fans, pulling from Chicago Bulls hues and the iconic models that carried those colors. However, the finish on the red overlays adds a layer of design that speaks to the year it represents. The ruby gemstone has long been associated with 40th anniversaries, and this sneaker uses that symbolism directly in both texture and tone.

The outsole comes in a matching red, sitting beneath a white midsole. That pairing continues the color play without overloading the upper with one dominant hue. While the base structure stays close to the original AJ1 released in 1985, the “Ruby” stands apart through its surface treatment and clear narrative connection to the brand’s anniversary.

Other performance-based elements of the design include the nylon tongue and cushioned collar, which offer comfort without distracting from the visual concept. The use of tonal stitching and layered materials adds subtle variation across the shoe.

The release of the Air Jordan 1 High OG “Ruby” signals a focused approach to commemorating Jordan Brand’s 40 years. Instead of releasing a generalized homage, the designers chose to reflect that timeline through a gemstone, tied to both durability and fire. In doing so, they delivered a sneaker that speaks to Jordan’s history while embracing current trends in texture and women’s exclusives.
