DSCENE Beauty presents Touch Tint Trace as part of DSCENE Magazine’s Design Under Pressure issue, introducing a beauty cover story featuring model Jane Fu, represented by Xdirectn Agency. Created by visual artist Yuchen Li, known as Moxi, and makeup artist Kyra Lui, the project brings historical objects into a contemporary visual language, using the human face as a surface for form, colour, intimacy, and interpretation.

Design Under Pressure examines the forces shaping creative work across fashion, beauty, design, architecture, art, film, music, and public life. The issue looks at pressure as a creative condition, tracing how artists respond to expectation, visibility, discipline, and control. With Touch Tint Trace, DSCENE Beauty approaches the theme through a different kind of pressure, the pressure of history carried by small objects, the pressure of cultural memory, and the act of translating ornament into a living image.
The project draws from the Fuyun Xuan Collection at the Hong Kong Museum of Art, where Kyra Lui first encountered the detail and intensity held within these small objects. Once used in late Imperial China to store tobacco for medicinal purposes, snuff bottles later became highly decorative objects, valued for their carvings, painted motifs, colour, and proportion. Through makeup and photography, the story returns them to the body, where their original function once created a direct sense of contact.
Across the series, Jane Fu and the models appear as extensions of the bottles, with makeup translating caps, vessels, surfaces, and tones onto the face. Eyes take on the colour of bottle caps, lips echo the body of the vessel, and hair by Fabien Picot adds texture across and around the face. The images move beyond replication, treating beauty as a way to read history through skin.
As part of Design Under Pressure, the DSCENE Beauty cover story looks at heritage through control, craft, and transformation.
