The Early History Behind Air Jordans
In 1984, Nike and NBA player Michael Jordan teamed up to launch Jordan Brand, one of the most iconic athlete-endorsed brands of all time. For 34 years, Air Jordans have ruled the basketball scene, but they weren’t always popular.
NBA had a rule about having all players in primarily white shoes. Throughout 1985 the NBA charged a $5000 fine per game that Michael Jordan wore his famous red and black sneakers on the court. Nike paid every fine for Michael Jordan as he wore his Air Jordan shoes.
Incidentally, the Air Jordan I is the only Air Jordans to have the Nike logo on them. As the Air Jordan influence grew, so did the changes in other Air Jordan sneakers. From colors to purposes, Air Jordans have made an incredible indent in basketball culture.
Nike cofounder Phil Knight called the success of Air Jordan I “the perfect combination of quality product, marketing, and athlete endorsement.”
Rapper Nas talked about Air Jordans in a recent ESPN and Netflix documentary about Michael Jordan “The Last Dance“. “For a kid, it was almost like owning a light saber, from Star Wars,” explains Nas in the documentary. “You needed that shoe to be like him. It was more than a status symbol. You knew that this guy was the guy.” he added.
