London-based designer Supriya Lele introduces her Spring Summer 2024 Collection, an embodiment of her dual identity as a British woman with Indian immigrant roots. Through her designs, she delves into the complexities and enchantments stemming from this duality. However, she isn’t bound by these cultural imprints, she seamlessly merges them into her unique fashion narrative. Instead of relying on nostalgia, Lele crafts an aesthetic realm that oscillates between reality and the fantasies.
SPRING SUMMER 2024 COLLECTIONS
In her inaugural solo presentation for Spring Summer 2024 season, Lele delves deeply into her own history and experiences. She reimagines memories of saris donned by the women in her lineage, transforming them into dynamic, color-rich silhouettes that celebrate the body. The traditional sari blouse undergoes a revolutionary transformation, emerging as a sultry leather corset, shedding its colonial baggage. She gives a nod to everyday Indian life with utilitarian cotton tank tops, but with a twist – they are altered to highlight the body’s sensuous curves.
Her color palette is a symphony of deep blacks and browns harmonized with shimmering foiled greens and lilacs. Every hue and texture she chooses has a story behind it, from artist Jai Chuhan’s lilac lipstick at an art gallery event to the vibrant green of an onlooker’s eye shadow. Age-old statues and idols inspire the collection’s earthier tones. Further inspiration pours in from ancient artifacts and sculptures, influencing her line of luxurious knitwear and accessories. The knits, in particular, hug the body, giving birth to silhouettes reminiscent of mystical underwater creatures.
Lele’s innovation shines in her use of 3-D printing, crafting seductive handbags, belts, and hardware reminiscent of classical goddesses. An exciting collaboration ensues as she joins forces with Bentley Motors, resulting in a bespoke leather jacket complemented by a baby blue leather corset bra. Crafted from Bentley’s leather off-cuts, this collaboration stands as a testament to shared values of craftsmanship, luxury, and heritage.
Another significant collaboration marks this season, as Supriya Lele and TENCELTM? come together. Numerous outfits have been designed using TENCELTM? LUXE fabric, highlighting TENCELTM?’s commitment to sustainable materials and eco-friendly practices.
