ADOR, the agency managing the popular K-pop girl group NewJeans, has taken a firm stance against online harassment following a disturbing incident during a live stream. On Monday, a malicious comment directed at the group’s member Hyein surfaced, telling the 15-year-old to “die.” This comment appeared during a streaming session hosted by Hyein and her bandmate Minji.
Reacting to the hateful comment, Hyein expressed her dismay, while Minji promptly took a screenshot of the user’s name for future reference. In response to this incident, ADOR released a statement on NewJeans’ communication platform, Phoning, assuring fans and the public that they are taking legal action against any forms of defamation, insult, and spreading of false information that could harm the reputation of the group’s members.
This incident highlights the challenges faced by young artists in the public eye. Hyein, at just 15 years old, is the youngest in the group, with other members including Minji and Hanni at 19, Danielle at 18, and Haerin at 17. The agency’s decision to pursue legal action underscores the seriousness with which it views such hateful conduct.
In an effort to protect the members and maintain a healthy online environment, ADOR has also announced a change in their policy regarding live comments. Moving forward, only paying subscribers will be allowed to leave comments during live sessions. This decision reflects the agency’s commitment to encouraging positive communication between NewJeans and their fans, while also safeguarding the well-being of the group members.
NewJeans, which debuted in July 2022 under ADOR, a music label under HYBE, has quickly risen to fame in the K-pop industry. The group is known for its hit songs like “Attention,” “Hype Boy,” and “Ditto,” all released in 2022. This incident, while unfortunate, highlights the need for stronger measures to protect artists from online harassment and ensure a safe environment for both the artists and their fans.
