The runway became a canvas for showcasing the Miao embroidery techniques that distinguish this collection. From towering patterns that echo Miao legends to intricately embroidered handbags, each design element was a celebration of heritage. The collection’s color palette, white, floral, black, red, and blue, draws directly from the hues of the five Miao communities, with modern shades like platinum, pink, black-gold, crimson-black, and cerulean. Structural innovation was at the heart of the collection, where traditional Miao pleated skirts were reimagined in forms like leather pleats, fluffy pleats, and short pleats. This reinterpretation extended to the menswear as well, with pleated hems introducing a new silhouette. The designs were enhanced with dramatic elements such as lengthened coats, sweeping capes, and cascading drapes that illustrated the grand narrative of migration.

Shiatzy Chen’s commitment to craftsmanship shone through a collaboration with seven artisans, who brought the ten sacred Miao embroidery techniques to life. Techniques such as Tin Embroidery, Piling Stitch, and Braid Stitch were celebrated in their application, turning each garment into a wearable piece of art. This dedication to embroidery emphasized its role not just as decoration but as a fundamental expression of the collection’s themes. Accessories played a significant role in defining the aesthetic and narrative depth of the collection. Miao silver, traditionally a symbol of status and identity, was creatively adapted into detachable stud brooches and intricate silver-chain necklaces that melded past and present. The collection’s footwear also echoed Miao influences, with heroically designed boots and studded accents that spoke to the strength and resilience of the Miao people.
