During Milan Design Week 2025, A-POC ABLE ISSEY MIYAKE unveils a new cross-disciplinary exhibition at the ISSEY MIYAKE / MILAN flagship store, titled “TYPE-XIII Atelier Oï Project.” Running from April 8 to April 13, the exhibition presents the brand’s latest experimental initiative in collaboration with Swiss design studio atelier oï. Together, they explore the tension between material and light, reimagining the dialogue between wire and cloth through a series of sculptural lighting prototypes.

DESIGN

Atelier oï, known for its work across architecture and product design, joins forces with A-POC ABLE ISSEY MIYAKE, a project that consistently pushes the limits of garment-making through interdisciplinary experimentation. Rather than focus solely on the final object, the collaboration emphasizes process and material research. What emerges are lighting pieces that feel both technical and intuitive, shaped by shared curiosity and continuous exchange.

Two new lighting collections are introduced: the “O Series” and the “A Series.” The “O Series,” developed in collaboration with Japanese portable lighting brand Ambientec, features oval-shaped lamps inspired by the delicate elegance of flowers. Designed to move easily through various spaces, each lamp is constructed with a detachable wire frame and a shade made from “Steam Stretch,” A-POC ABLE’s recycled polyester textile that transforms under heat into soft, three-dimensional pleats. The resulting glow is gentle and atmospheric, less a fixture, more a living object.

The organic design of the “O Series” allows users to interact with the lamp intuitively, adjusting its placement and orientation like a flower in a vase. Its collapsible form makes it adaptable to modern living spaces, offering both aesthetic value and practical functionality. With its soft light and sculptural presence, the “O Series” is a clear extension of A-POC ABLE’s textile innovation, now applied to a new kind of sensory experience.

The “A Series” draws on A-POC’s foundations, using knit fabric as the core material for the lampshades. Developed in partnership with Spanish lighting brand PARACHILNA, known for its refined materials and craftsmanship, the pendant light design features knitted shades that come to life when structured by inserted wire frames. These knitted elements can be customized, cut, joined, and shaped, into single, double, or triple configurations, opening new possibilities for modular and expressive lighting design.

Both collections reflect the philosophy of A-POC ABLE ISSEY MIYAKE: to challenge the conventions of fabrication and form by blurring the boundaries between disciplines. The “TYPE-XIII Atelier Oï Project” is more than a showcase of prototypes, it’s a demonstration of how design thinking can travel from body to space, and from textile to light. Plans for production are already underway, with further details expected in the coming months. For now, visitors in Milan are offered a rare glimpse at an evolving conversation between movement, material, and imagination.
