MUBI has unveiled a first-look trailer for Hot Milk, the highly anticipated film written and directed by Rebecca Lenkiewicz, set to premiere on July 4. The new teaser offers glimpses of a sun-drenched Spanish coastline and introduces viewers to the the intense emotional bond driving the story. MUBI’s release builds momentum ahead of summer, positioning Hot Milk as one of the season’s most intimate dramas.

Set against the heat of Almería, Hot Milk follows Rose (Fiona Shaw), a woman confined to a wheelchair by an unexplained illness, and her daughter Sofia (Emma Mackey). The pair arrive in the coastal town seeking the guidance of Gómez (Vincent Perez), an enigmatic healer rumored to hold the key to Rose’s condition. Early footage hints at a simmering tension as Sofia navigates her mother’s dependence and her own desire for independence.
Sofia encounters Ingrid (Vicky Krieps), a free-spirited traveler whose magnetic presence challenges everything Sofia thought she knew. Their affair promises both liberation and risk, suggesting that freedom pursued without caution can become another form of confinement. The visual contrasts, the scorching sun, rugged cliffs, and intimate close-ups, underscore the film’s exploration of desire and dependency.
Hot Milk’s journey from page to screen was driven by a female-led creative team determined to honor Deborah Levy’s 2016 novel. Producers Christine Langan and Kate Glover championed the project from its inception, convinced that the story’s immersive tone and psychological depth demanded a cinematic treatment.
Rebecca Lenkiewicz, celebrated for her work on Disobedience and Colette, signed on not only to adapt the screenplay but to make her directorial debut. “I wanted to avoid the male gaze in beach and love scenes,” Lenkiewicz explains, “and capture something raw and untamed.” With the backing of Film4 and Hanway Films, Lenkiewicz assembled an international crew to bring her vision to life, ensuring that every frame reflected the novel’s immersive atmosphere.
