MUBI has released the official trailer for Making Marie Antoinette, a feature-length documentary offering an intimate look at Sofia Coppola’s 2006 film Marie Antoinette. Directed through footage captured by her mother, filmmaker Eleanor Coppola, the documentary revisits the production twenty years after its original release.

The release follows a series of events marking the film’s twentieth anniversary. On September 20, DSCENE joined Cartier Cinema Club for an evening dedicated to Sofia Coppola’s Marie Antoinette. The event brought guests together for cocktails and a special screening of the film starring Kirsten Dunst. The anniversary program also includes a new 4K restoration and an exhibition at the Château de Versailles, which opened at the Petit Trianon on September 22 and continues through January 24, 2027, with support from Cartier.
Making Marie Antoinette returns to 2005, when Sofia Coppola began production on her third feature film, starring Kirsten Dunst and Jason Schwartzman. The production gained unprecedented access to the Palace of Versailles, becoming the first film to receive permission to shoot there. Eleanor Coppola accompanied her daughter throughout filming, documenting the experience from her perspective as a filmmaker and mother.
During the production, Eleanor recorded approximately eighty hours of material, capturing Sofia’s creative process and the work of the people responsible for bringing the film to the screen. The documentary includes footage of renowned costume designer Milena Canonero, whose designs contributed to the film’s distinctive visual identity. It also explores Sofia’s experiences as a young female director navigating the demands of a major production.

To mark the anniversary and honor her mother’s wishes, Sofia returned to the previously unseen footage and helped develop it into a feature-length documentary. Editor Aaron Matthews assembled the material with contributions from Eleanor’s close friends Davia Nelson and Liz Bird.
Academy Award nominee Diane Lane provides Eleanor’s voice, reading extracts from her journals. These passages document her observations during filming and her reflections on the relationship with her daughter, giving the documentary a deeply personal perspective.
“My mother and I started going through her footage during lockdown. It was always her wish to make what she shot into a feature length documentary,” Sofia Coppola explained. She also described the emotional experience of revisiting the production through her mother’s perspective, recognizing the different ways Eleanor experienced the shoot.

The documentary’s arrival offers another opportunity to examine the visual decisions behind Marie Antoinette, from its elaborate costumes to Coppola’s interpretation of eighteenth-century Versailles. The anniversary exhibition extends that exploration through working documents, mood boards, costumes, accessories, and reconstructed sets.
Lorenzo Mieli, Mario Gianani, Rachel Dengiz, Youree Henley, and Sofia Coppola produced Making Marie Antoinette. OUR FILMS, a Mediawan company, Mediawan Rights, and Entourage Pictures financed the project with support from CHANEL.
MUBI will release the documentary in UK and Irish cinemas on October 23, followed by worldwide streaming on November 6, 2026. The platform will also introduce the new 4K restoration of Marie Antoinette in US and Canadian theaters and on MUBI on October 23.
