The release draws influence from Louisiana and the culture that defines the region known as the “Sportsman’s Paradise.” Rukus, a Louisiana boutique with deep ties to its community, approaches this collaboration with a clear vision: bring regional identity into a skate shoe.

The project focuses on the mallard duck, an animal closely linked to local hunting culture. Rukus and New Balance Numeric build the entire shoe around this reference, using color and material choices that align with the bird’s natural palette.
Brown suede and leather form the foundation of the upper. This choice mirrors the body feathers of the mallard and gives the shoe a warm, organic base. Rukus positions this material choice as the anchor of the design, allowing the more vibrant sections to stand out without overwhelming the model. The brown upper also gives the 480 a sturdy look that suits the skate category while serving the narrative tied to the collaboration.
Yellow tumbled leather covers the toe box, calling back to the mallard’s beak with immediate visual clarity. This panel introduces a textured contrast that plays well with the suede, creating a focal point at the front of the shoe. Green suede appears on the heel counter, bringing in the rich color associated with the mallard’s iridescent head.
