Nike introduces the Pegasus 42 as the latest evolution of its longest-running performance franchise. The shoe builds on four decades of development focused on responsive cushioning and consistent daily performance. Pegasus has remained a key model since its debut in 1982, and this new version advances that history through updated Air technology, revised construction, and refined comfort.

A curved, full-length Air Zoom unit drives the Pegasus 42, delivering 15 percent greater energy return than the previous version. This updated configuration creates a responsive sensation underfoot designed to support a wide range of running activities, from casual jogs to structured training sessions. Nike engineered the Air Zoom unit to enhance propulsion while maintaining stability during repetitive motion, allowing runners to sustain momentum across longer distances.
Nike athlete Ethan Strand, the NCAA indoor 3,000-meter champion, describes the evolution as both familiar and improved. He notes that the Air unit provides added power in each stride, reinforcing the model’s role as a dependable option for everyday use. His perspective reflects the Pegasus franchise’s long association with runners who rely on consistent performance during training.
Nike refined the internal structure of the Pegasus 42 through a modified last that improves fit and forefoot cushioning. Engineers added an internal spring structure beneath the toes that accommodates an additional three millimeters of cushioning without increasing overall stack height. This adjustment increases comfort while preserving the shoe’s balanced profile.
The midsole continues to use ReactX foam, which Nike introduced in the Pegasus 41. This material supports cushioning and responsiveness while maintaining durability through repeated wear. Beneath the midsole, a modernized waffle outsole provides traction on varied surfaces and supports smooth transitions during forward motion. This outsole design reflects Nike’s long use of the waffle pattern as a functional performance feature.
Nike also updated the upper to improve breathability and weight. The lightweight material conforms closely to the foot, while a midfoot support system and fully molded sock liner enhance overall fit. These changes contribute to stability during daily use and extended runs. The updated exterior includes refreshed Pegasus branding, a speed-dash graphic across the upper, and a range of color options.
The Pegasus 42 remains a key part of Nike’s simplified road running lineup, which includes Pegasus, Vomero, and Structure. Pegasus focuses on responsive cushioning for everyday running, while Vomero emphasizes maximum cushioning and Structure delivers supportive cushioning. This three-model system helps runners identify footwear suited to their specific needs.
Nike will release the Pegasus 42 on April 9 through nike.com and select retail partners, continuing the franchise’s long presence in performance running footwear.
