Ariana Grande returns with “hate that i made you love me,” the lead single from her upcoming eighth studio album, Petal. The release opens a new chapter for the pop star and introduces BabyDoll Music, her newly established imprint label operating under an exclusive license with Republic Records. With this move, Grande places the first piece of the Petal era inside a broader creative and business shift, giving the single weight beyond its position as a new track.

MUSIC

The song reunites Grande with Max Martin and Ilya Salmanzadeh, two longtime collaborators tied to some of her most recognizable pop work. Here, they shape a mid-tempo track that draws from alt-pop and R&B, with trap-influenced production moving under a steady, sauntering instrumental.

Grande uses a quieter vocal approach across the track, giving “hate that i made you love me” a controlled emotional charge. Her delivery stays subdued and direct, matching the song’s darker tone. The production gives the vocals room to sit close to the listener, creating a sense of confession across the track.

Lyrically, the song works through regret, attachment, and the damage left after a relationship shifts out of balance. The writing frames the breakup through sharp self-awareness, with Grande addressing the role she played in making someone feel attached. The track also extends toward her public life, where fame, scrutiny, and visibility shape the emotional reading. Grande has connected the song to her personal writing process, calling it one of her favorite songs she will ever write in an Instagram post.

The visual rollout currently centers on the comic book-inspired official lyric video, which extends the identity of “hate that i made you love me” beyond the track itself. “hate that i made you love me” is available now across digital streaming platforms. For physical music collectors, the single appears on Grande’s webstore in several formats, including CD, cassette, and 7-inch vinyl. The vinyl edition includes a cappella and instrumental B-sides, giving fans additional versions of the song as the Petal era begins.
