Yung Lean Turns the 2026 VMAs Into the World of “Storm”

Yung Lean and Gener8ion closed the VMAs by recreating Romain Gavras’ surreal schoolyard vision, complete with synchronized students, ice cream and a destroyed Moon Person.

Still from GENER8ION feat. Yung Lean Perform “STORM” | 2026 VMAs on YouTube, 0:39

For the final performance of the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards, Yung Lean and Gener8ion avoided the usual awards-show formula. Instead, they brought the unsettling visual language of “Storm” directly onto the stage at Los Angeles’ Peacock Theater, turning their VMA debut into something closer to a live short film.

MUSIC

The performance recreated the atmosphere of the “Storm” video, released in April by Gener8ion, the project of French producer Surkin, and Yung Lean. Directed by Romain Gavras, the original seven-minute film places Lean inside a British boarding school in 2034, casting the Swedish artist as an intimidating presence among its uniformed students. Since its release, the film has attracted more than 26 million views. That fictional environment became the foundation for Sunday night’s staging.

Lean appeared in a deliberately disheveled school uniform before smashing one of MTV’s Moon Person statues. From there, he moved toward a large formation of students as the performance recreated one of the video’s most recognizable sequences.

The choreography did most of the visual work. Students moved collectively around Lean, their synchronized bodies creating a wave-like optical effect as he remained positioned within the shifting formation. The result translated the strange, almost hallucinatory quality of Gavras’ film to a live television stage without abandoning the visual vocabulary that made “Storm” so memorable in the first place.

Lean approached the entire spectacle with characteristic detachment. While the performers around him moved in tightly controlled formations, he casually ate an ice cream. By the closing moments, he had moved directly toward the camera, spat onto its lens and then wiped it with the dessert.

It was an appropriately strange ending for a performance that seemed largely uninterested in behaving like an awards-show performance.

The appearance also arrived with considerable attention already surrounding the original film. “Storm” received four nominations at this year’s VMAs, including Video of the Year, Best Choreography, Best Direction and Best Long-Form Video. Its presence across those categories reflects how central the visual itself has become to the project.

Gener8ion and Lean expanded the project musically earlier this year with “Storm I” and “Storm II,” both appearing on Gener8ion’s Love & Tears album, released in June.

For Lean, the VMA appearance follows another high-profile release this month. He joined Metro Boomin and Future on “That’s It,” included on the GTA VI: The Album soundtrack in September.

Yet the VMAs offered something different. Rather than adjusting “Storm” to fit the scale and conventions of American television, Lean, Surkin and their collaborators effectively allowed the video’s peculiar universe to take over the room. School uniforms replaced pop-star costuming. Choreography became an optical device. A Moon Person became something to destroy.

And while everyone around him moved with precision, Yung Lean stood in the middle of it all eating ice cream.
