If you always receive compliments about your taste in interior design, it may probably be the career path for you. A few signs that becoming an interior designer is something for you to consider is if you have fun while decorating rooms, arranging furniture, and doing anything related to design. Before you embark on the journey, you should first know some facts about being an interior designer. Here are the most important ones.

Read more after the jump:

Being a Designer Does Not Mean You are Also a Decorator

A big difference between the two is education. You can be an interior decorator right now. The job is enjoyable where you play with colors, textiles, fabrics, and other items. You can be called a decorator if you print out business cards and use them to promote yourself with such a title. However, you can only be an interior designer if you complete an accredited education. It can either be a bachelor’s or an associate degree.

You Should Have a Talent for Designing

Some people can work with colors and architecture. However, if you want to excel as an interior designer, you should know more about them, along with spatial arrangements and textiles among others. It is a long and continuous process, which you have to keep discovering. For instance, designing the interiors of home elevators may be different and challenging for most people. As a professional, you should know how to work with other people as well. Your client may require you to design a residential elevator, which means you have to consider the colors and materials as well.

There is More to Fabric When it Comes to Interior Design

Most people think that interior design is only about fabrics and colors. However, you will find yourself designing other things. As mentioned, you will probably be asked to design the interior of an elevator. Some clients may also request for your help when it comes to structural buildings. At the same time, education is not just about arranging based on hues and shapes. You will also have to learn about spatial concepts, ergonomics, and building codes.

You Should be Ready to Socialize

You will certainly meet a lot of people along the way. If you talk to some interior designers, they will talk about stories about their past clients. Most of them are not as exciting as you may think. As with any job, it can be stressful. Since you will deal with different individuals, you need to be a people person.

Experience is a Must

Start as early as you can when building your portfolio. This career path entails several competitors. To survive, you need to show your potential clients that you have an outstanding collection of designs and projects.

Being an interior design may be all about coming up with styles that go together. In the end, however, it is not about your taste and preferences but your clients’. You need to know how to listen and take criticisms as well. Sometimes, you have to put your own style aside and focus on the goal of ensuring your customers’ satisfaction. Interior designing is a tough adventure but it can surely be fun and exhilarating.
