The Ugly Shoe Trend Continues Into 2021 With Supreme

From Balenciaga‘s chunky dad sneakers to Bottega Veneta’s puddle boots, the “ugly shoe” trend is here to stay. This anti-aesthetic approach to fashion was introduced in late 2016 with Christopher Kane’s Crocs collaboration, and at the time it didn’t look like it was going to be here for long.

If 2020 was going to be any type of shoe, it would be an ugly shoe. But here we are, in 2021, and the trend is still alive and kicking, with the latest Nike and Supreme collaboration. They worked together on a new version of the Air Max Goadome silhouette, that confirms the ugly shoe apocalypse is already upon us.

Whether you care about fashion or not, you’re probably familiar with Supreme and its red box logo. It has grown from a small shop in New York to the biggest name in streetwear. Founded as a skate brand, Supreme now believes that slapping its logo on unusual items like nunchucks or fire extinguisher makes them more valuable.

The brand’s popularity and coolness now lays in limited numbers of products, which are difficult to obtain, if you’re not comfortable in waiting in lines for hours to get them. Owning something that others do not, is a type of narcissism on which the brand counts and which is greatly celebrated by  social media like Instagram. I bet that most people who wear Supreme today have never been on a skateboard. Today, Supreme has become one of the most desirable brands of the fashion elite, with prices ranging from $50 dollars for a tee, up to $3000 for their Louis Vuitton collaboration.

In November 2020, a streetwear brand is sold to VF, the parent company of Vans and Timberland, in a deal that valued the apparel maker at roughly $2.1 billion including debt.
