Outside of finance, getting a job in fashion is probably one of the hardest fields to break into. Even if you have a flair for design, there’s still plenty of competition. That’s why only the top talent ever make a name for themselves. But how do they do it? While some are just genuinely gifted and get lucky, most others must hustle to get started in the fashion world. If you’re determined to make a name for yourself but are sure where to start, this guide is for you. Read on the learn inside tips on how you can work in the fashion world.

Start with the Right Education

To work in fashion, you need the right education, and that starts with learning everything you can in your niche. If you want to eventually work as a creative director for a fashion house, you’d want to learn as much as you can about design concepts, marketing, and even business administration. The same holds true if you’re passion is to create a line. You’d need to understand how different textures complement each other as well as how to create a garment pattern from scratch. It’s also important to note that self-directed learning is equally beneficial. The internet is home to a wealth of information you can use, including free videos, masterclasses, and even e-books you can download to read.

Choose a Career Path

Under the fashion umbrella, there are so many career paths. In addition to being a designer, you could become a journalist, merchandise buyer, marketer, photographer, or public relation specialist. All these paths can be rewarding, as long as you are pursuing the right one.

Have Financial Resources

Those who work in fashion usually look like they do. Specifically, their wardrobe reflects their personality. That said, putting together a capsule collection that you can wear to school or to network can be expensive. That’s why you need to plan ahead and allot enough money for your wardrobe. If you’ve already been networking and have a series of interviews or internships lined up, then making a good first impression is a must. If you’re short on cash, you could think about getting a personal loan to purchase what you need. There are plenty of places to get a loan, including in person and online. There are also a lot of online resources you can use to learn more about how they work and whether you qualify.

Apply for an Internship

No matter which route you eventually end up taking, you should look for internship. In this field, it’s usually always better to get your foot in the door through internships. While learning the ropes, you’ll gain hands-on experience while experiencing day-to-day life in the role. Internships also give you a chance to see if you’re cut out to work in your chosen role. Many times, new prospects don’t truly understand the work demands and how it may affect their work-life balance. After interning, they then realize that their dream job really isn’t as dreamy as they hoped it would be.

Accept Constructive Criticism

It’s safe to say that if you want a work in fashion, particularly as a fashion designer, you need to be able to accept criticism. As a designer, you’ll have higher-ups or even from other designers. When it happens, try to keep an open mind. People with work for and with usually don’t have any ill intent. What’s more is that if the criticism comes from your boss, they know better than you. Use the feedback as a chance to not improve, but also change the way you see yourself in this role. Unless the criticism was malicious, use it your advantage.

Start Building Your Portfolio

Regardless of the role you eventually want to work in, you’ll probably still need a portfolio that highlights your skills. Keep in mind that it doesn’t need to extensive or contain over-the-top examples of what you can do. It simply needs to highlight what you hope to achieve, examples of any patterns or actual pieces you’ve created and most importantly, why you want this job.

Look for a Mentor

While networking, you should also be on the lookout for a mentor. The right mentor is someone who can provide insider secrets and help you learn the ropes. They should have years of experience and be able teach you things that you can’t learn in school. They should also be able to tell you the pros and cons of the industry as well as things to avoid when you’re just starting out.
