Nike Revives Cortez and Killshot with “Tiempo” Twist

The latest “Tiempo” editions channel football heritage through premium materials and subtle updates.

Nike is bringing the pitch to the streets with its latest footwear update, infusing the Cortez and Killshot 2 with design cues borrowed directly from vintage football boots. Dubbed the “Tiempo” editions, these two classic silhouettes are reimagined with a distinct nod to one of the sport’s most iconic features: the fold-over tongue.

SNEAKERS

The most immediately noticeable update is the fold-over tongue on both models, a reference to traditional football boots that often featured this detail to cover laces. In this case, it’s less about function and more about signaling the source of inspiration. Both pairs feature an embossed Swoosh, white on the Cortez and black on the Killshot, delivering a subtle branding twist that emphasizes the textural upgrades rather than relying on color contrast.

On the Cortez SE, Nike introduces a full premium leather upper with carefully double-stitched paneling. The updated silhouette also carries enhanced branding, with a white Swoosh panel partially tucked under the tongue flap, a special edition tongue tag, and silver insoles. On the heel, a debossed “72” alongside a Nike check calls back to the Cortez’s original debut year. The design is grounded by a black midsole and classic herringbone gum outsole, while white laces offer a slight tonal break.

The Killshot 2 “Tiempo” opts for a more streamlined approach, outfitted in glossy chrome-finished uppers with reduced panel stitching. The material choice lends the sneaker a cleaner look, while still referencing sports gear through its finish. Branding remains present through the tongue and insoles, but the heel branding switches to embroidered logos for a more understated appearance. A gum midsole and outsole, paired with black laces, reinforces the model’s cohesive, dark-edged aesthetic.

While the two pairs differ in execution, they share a design philosophy that values texture and subtlety over loud graphics or disruptive colorways. By focusing on material quality and subtle nods to Nike’s sporting past, the “Tiempo” editions serve both as a design experiment and a tribute to legacy. The reworked Cortez and Killshot 2 suggest that Nike is willing to mine its archives for cues while still pushing each silhouette toward a premium lifestyle segment.

Both sneakers will release online and at select retailers in Summer 2025. With a relatively accessible price point and design elements that appeal to both football nostalgia and sneaker culture, the Cortez SE and Killshot 2 “Tiempo” editions may find footing with a wide audience looking for everyday sneakers with a bit more story.
