BALENCIAGA x Demna: Monday and Hampton Sneakers

A Dual Spotlight at the End of an Era

Balenciaga
’s sneaker story enters a defining moment with the Monday and Hampton sneakers, the last headline releases under Demna’s creative direction before his transition to Gucci. These two models, each distinct in design and spirit, represent the apex of Demna’s approach to luxury sneaker culture and mark a significant inflection point for the brand’s identity.

Balenciaga Monday: Artisanal Athleticism

The Monday sneaker, set for an online pre-launch on January 20, 2025, is a bold reinterpretation of vintage running shoes. As Balenciaga’s first all-leather hybrid, it pairs a sleek, full-grain leather upper with an ultra-lightweight technical rubber sole. The silhouette references retro athletic footwear, but the execution is unmistakably Balenciaga – think raw edges, visible stitching, and deliberate distressing that evoke a lived-in, hand-finished feel. The 3B Sports Icon signature on the sole further roots the Monday in the house’s vocabulary of high-fashion-meets-DIY. The Balenciaga Monday sneaker retails for USD 995 no matter the style, this is the price available on the brand’s official web page and it is mirrored into the brand’s stores.

Hampton: Pure Minimalism Meets Street

The Hampton sneaker stands out for its clean lines and understated luxury, channeling a minimalist aesthetic that’s become a Demna hallmark. Crafted with precision, the Hampton’s silhouette is more pared back, favoring subtle branding and refined construction. The shoe’s simplicity is deceptive; every detail is meticulously considered, from the supple leather to the perfectly proportioned sole. The Hampton’s quiet confidence positions it as a versatile staple, equally at home in streetwear rotations and elevated, everyday wardrobes. Balenciaga Hampton Sneaker retails for 890USD on the official Balenciaga shop.

Balenciaga Sneaker Campaign That Captures the Moment

The campaign, shot by Collier Schorr and styled by Marie Chaix, features top models Kit Butler and Mathieu Simoneau as well as Peng Chang, and Roxane Plaza. Camille Lutz’s makeup and Julia Wagner’s set design keep the focus on the product and the attitude. Casting by Franziska Bachofen Echt reinforces the global, genre-defining reach of Balenciaga’s sneaker movement.

Sneakers as the Heart of Balenciaga

Sneakers have become a defining component of Balenciaga’s brand under Demna, bridging the gap between luxury and streetwear in a way no other house has managed. While the hype and volume of drops from Nike, New Balance, Puma, and Adidas remain unmatched, Balenciaga is the only luxury label to consistently capture the attention of sneakerheads alongside fashion insiders. Each new release, especially the Monday and Hampton, is both a product and a cultural event.

Looking Forward: Legacy and Uncertainty

With Demna’s departure, the future of Balenciaga’s sneaker program is an open question. Pierpaolo inherits a legacy where sneakers are not an afterthought but a central pillar of the brand’s global identity. Whether the new direction will sustain the momentum and credibility built by Demna remains to be seen. What’s clear is that the Balenciaga Monday and Hampton sneakers serve as both a culmination and a sendoff, solidifying the house’s singular place in the luxury sneaker landscape.

As the campaign launches, the Monday and Hampton sneakers perhaps divert from the tension and anticipation of a brand at a crossroads – where fashion, street, and craft collide, and the next chapter is about to begin. But is it all smooth sailing in the Balenciaga sneaker department?

My guess is they will just displace the focus from the sneakers. Balenciaga is already bleeding money and at loss… so is Gucci but they have appointed Demna there who is let’s face it responsible for putting Balenciaga in trouble that they are already 🫠
