The 98th Academy Awards took place on March 15, 2026, at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, Los Angeles. The ceremony honored films released in 2025 and aired live on ABC. Comedian Conan O’Brien returned as host, marking his second consecutive year leading Hollywood’s biggest awards night.
MOVIES
Ahead of the ceremony, Ryan Coogler’s Sinners entered the evening with the highest number of nominations, receiving sixteen. Paul Thomas Anderson’s One Battle After Another followed with thirteen nominations. Several other titles maintained strong presence across categories, including Frankenstein, Marty Supreme, and Sentimental Value.

The evening featured several musical performances. Miles Caton and songwriter Raphael Saadiq led an elaborate tribute to Sinners with the nominated song “I Lied to You,” joined by an all-star ensemble including Eric Gales, Buddy Guy, Brittany Howard, Christone “Kingfish” Ingram, Bobby Rush, Shaboozey, and Alice Smith, with actors Jayme Lawson and Li Jun Li on stage and ballerina Misty Copeland delivering a full choreographed dance sequence. A second musical segment featured vocalists Ejae, Audrey Nuna, and Rei Ami performing “Golden” from the animated film KPop Demon Hunters.
The night’s most emotionally resonant performance, however, came from Barbra Streisand, who returned to the Oscars stage to sing “The Way We Were” during a tribute honoring Robert Redford, a moment that earned one of the longest standing ovations of the evening.

The presenter lineup delivered some of the night’s most talked-about moments. Anna Wintour and Anne Hathaway walked out together in a wink at The Devil Wears Prada, while the full Bridesmaids cast, Melissa McCarthy, Rose Byrne, Kristen Wiig, Maya Rudolph, and Ellie Kemper, reunited on stage to present the original score award on the film’s 15th anniversary. Ewan McGregor and Nicole Kidman shared a Moulin Rouge reunion moment at the podium, and Javier Bardem used his time on stage to make a direct political statement, opening with “No to war, and free Palestine.”
Paul Thomas Anderson‘s One Battle After Another dominated the night. The film secured six Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director. Sean Penn won Best Supporting Actor for his performance in the film, while Anderson also received the Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay. The film also received awards for Best Film Editing and Best Casting, a category introduced by the Academy for the first time this year.

The acting awards were spread across four different films: Michael B. Jordan won Best Actor for his role in Sinners. Jessie Buckley received Best Actress for Hamnet. Amy Madigan won Best Supporting Actress for Weapons, while Sean Penn completed the acting winners with his supporting role in One Battle After Another.
Several moments during the ceremony carried historical significance. Cinematographer Autumn Durald Arkapaw won Best Cinematography for her work on Sinners, becoming the first woman and the first Black cinematographer to receive the award. In the short film categories, the Live Action Short Film award ended in a tie, an uncommon outcome in Academy Awards history. The Academy also introduced the Best Casting category for the first time. Cassandra Kulukundis won the inaugural award for One Battle After Another.

International cinema also received recognition during the evening. The Norwegian film Sentimental Value won Best International Feature Film, marking the first time a film from Norway received that award. Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein collected several craft awards including production design, costume design, and makeup and hairstyling. Avatar: Fire and Ash won the Oscar for visual effects, while F1 received the award for sound.
The 2026 ceremony reflected a year defined by both large-scale productions and director-led projects. With six wins including Best Picture and Best Director, One Battle After Another ultimately led the awards tally. Below is the full list of nominees and winners from the 98th Academy Awards.
