Prime Video has released the official trailer for The Love Hypothesis, the upcoming romantic comedy starring Lili Reinhart and Tom Bateman. Based on Ali Hazelwood’s bestselling 2021 novel of the same name, the film brings its academic setting, fake-dating premise and central romance to the screen ahead of a global September 23, 2026 release.

Reinhart plays Olive Smith, a Ph.D. candidate focused on building a future in academia. Her carefully organized life changes when she realizes that her best friend Ahn, played by Rachel Marsh, has feelings for Olive’s crush Jeremy, portrayed by Nicholas Duvernay. Determined to convince Ahn that she has moved on, Olive makes an impulsive decision and kisses professor Adam Carlsen, played by Bateman.
That unexpected moment leads Olive and Adam into a fake relationship built around a mutually beneficial agreement. They establish rules and boundaries intended to keep the arrangement under control. As they continue spending time together, those boundaries become increasingly difficult to maintain, forcing Olive to confront feelings that do not fit neatly within the original plan.
The official trailer gives audiences a first extended look at Reinhart and Bateman together as Olive and Adam. It moves through the awkward beginnings of their arrangement and the growing chemistry that follows, while introducing scenes readers will recognize from Hazelwood’s novel.
Reinhart has described preserving the emotional core of Hazelwood’s story as an important part of bringing the novel to screen. Beyond Olive and Adam’s romance, the story places considerable focus on friendship and loyalty, particularly through Olive’s initial decision to help Ahn pursue Jeremy. Reinhart also serves as an executive producer on the film.
Claire Scanlon directs The Love Hypothesis from a screenplay by Sarah Rothschild, with Elizabeth Cantillon producing. The supporting cast includes Marsh, Duvernay, Jaboukie Young-White and Arty Froushan, expanding the academic circle around Olive and Adam.
