Piaget Reinterprets Andy Warhol’s Camouflage as Wearable Art

Inspired by Warhol’s 1986 self-portraits, the limited-edition timepiece transforms color, abstraction, and precious materials into a miniature composition.

Piaget revisits the work of Andy Warhol with the Andy Warhol Camouflage Limited Edition Watch, drawing inspiration from the artist’s 1986 Camouflage self-portraits. Limited to 86 pieces worldwide, the timepiece translates Warhol’s exploration of identity and visibility into a composition of ornamental stones and precious metals. The result connects the artist’s experimental approach to imagery with Piaget’s long-standing interest in color and decorative materials.

In his Camouflage self-portraits, Warhol obscured his face beneath patterns traditionally associated with concealment. The works explored the contradictions of celebrity, transforming an image of disguise into an instantly recognizable portrait. Piaget approaches this visual language through abstraction, reconstructing the camouflage pattern as a geometric arrangement across the watch dial.

Rather than reproducing the original artwork, Piaget uses sodalite, turquoise, satin-finished gold, and polished rose gold to interpret its shapes and colors. The dial contains 27 individual elements, assembled into an intricate composition that introduces depth through contrasting textures and reflective surfaces.

“Our objective is to take inspiration from Andy Warhol’s creations without strictly reproducing each of his works on a dial,” explains Stéphanie Sivrière, Artistic Director of Piaget.

More than 100 hours went into researching, designing, and producing the dial. Turquoise provides vibrant blue tones, while sodalite introduces darker shades and natural mineral variations. Gold sections interrupt the stone surfaces, creating an architectural quality that changes with the movement of light.

The technique reflects Piaget’s history of working with ornamental stones. Since the early 1960s, the Maison has incorporated approximately 50 different varieties into its creations, including lapis lazuli, jade, opal, and coral.

Warhol was an enthusiastic watch collector who owned dozens of timepieces, including seven Piaget models. His friendship with Yves Piaget extended into New York’s social and artistic circles, where they shared an interest in art, fashion, and nightlife.

Among Warhol’s watches was reference 15102, featuring a distinctive 45 mm cushion-shaped case designed by Jean-Claude Gueit and produced between 1972 and 1977. This design eventually became the foundation of Piaget’s contemporary Andy Warhol collection.

Following its revival as the Black Tie Vintage in 2014, the model received the artist’s name in 2024 through an official partnership with The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts. The collaboration introduced annual editions inspired by his work, beginning with Collage in 2025.

The new Camouflage edition features an 18-karat white gold case, dauphine hands, a blue alligator leather strap, and Piaget’s self-winding 501P1 Manufacture movement. The case back carries Warhol’s engraved signature and the individual edition number.

By transforming Warhol’s painted camouflage into a composition of stone and gold, Piaget gives the familiar imagery a different physical presence. The watch reflects the artist’s fascination with surface, reproduction, and consumer objects, placing those ideas within a design intended to be worn and collected.
