Discover Hyun Mi Nielsen‘s Spring Summer 2018 Mensch Couture Collection that explores though times of mass migration, as well as inner struggle as we move forward, inspired the vision of human figure on the move trough time and space. This was designer’s third presentation as guest member of the official haute couture calendar.
Couture Collections
“The collection takes its cue from the Yiddish word mensch, which translates as person of honour and decency. The at once romantic and raw creations are among others indebted to the rag-pickers of the past and the homeless of today, who seek out anything of dignity in the dirt. The collection is indebted to birds such as the magpies, which shrewdly single out anything that shines. Mensch is a collection of impressions of a composite world, where things continuously de- and recompose into new constellations.
Hyun Mi Nielsen up-cycles materials through various quilting and patchwork techniques that recall anything from settler and folk culture to flower power and punk. The composite character of the creations and the origins of the chosen materials are not brushed over, but spelled out by use of multicolour topstitching, safety pin applications of found metal objects and exploded raw edge seams. The collection is the collision of the simple and sensual, the refined and raw, the humble and lush. Mensch unfolds a creative universe, where there’s continuous flow and disruption between denim, leather, silk, viscose and other disparate materials.“
