In a fashion landscape fixated on achieving an elusive ideal of fit, Kunihiko Morinaga breaks convention in his Fall/Winter 2024-25 collection by paying homage to the world of inanimate objects. Set beneath the grandeur of Pont Alexandre III, a mesmerizing spectacle unfolds: geometric shapes—spheres, pyramids, cubes, and more—grace the runway in sleek, contemporary ensembles, spinning and posing as if animated.
The show commences with a nod to childhood nostalgia, as a spherical figure, reminiscent of Doraemon, dons a blue and white ball shirt, propelled by a Take-copter. Morinaga draws inspiration from the beloved Japanese cartoon character and its creator, Fujiko F. Fujio, crafting a whimsical tribute that blurs the lines between reality and fantasy.
Following Doraemon’s lead, other iconic characters from the series make their appearance, each represented by a distinct geometric shape and clad in reimagined versions of their signature attire. The runway evolves with spherical creations, teasing Morinaga’s upcoming HERNO® Globe collection, merging sustainability with Italian luxury craftsmanship. As the show progresses, human models seamlessly integrate with their object counterparts, showcasing Morinaga’s innovative approach to design. Rejecting traditional norms, Morinaga challenges the notion of one-size-fits-all fashion, instead embracing the beauty of clothes designed for objects, which, when draped on human forms, unveil an unexpected elegance.
Through his boundary-pushing collection, Kunihiko Morinaga invites us to reimagine the relationship between clothing and wearer, offering a whimsical blueprint for a fantasy everyday wardrobe—one that transcends age, gender, and size. In this surreal yet captivating universe, fashion becomes a playful expression of individuality and imagination.
