On February 20th, 2024, Balenciaga launched a multifaceted collaboration paying homage to the esteemed American composer and arranger, Angelo Badalamenti, who passed away on December 11th, 2022. This collaboration, which commenced in May 2020 prior to Badalamenti’s passing, is a heartfelt tribute initiated in partnership with the Manhattan School of Music, and his daughter, Danielle Badalamenti. The project encompasses various elements, including an original playlist curated by Badalamenti himself, showcasing a compilation of his works, available for streaming or download on balenciaga.com/angelobadalamenti. Accompanying this musical tribute is a line of limited-edition Balenciaga Music | Angelo Badalamenti merchandise, featuring designs inspired by Badalamenti’s hand-scripted score, “Torch Theme.”
The collaboration extends beyond merchandising, as it incorporates a campaign photographed and filmed in New York at the Manhattan School of Music. This campaign features both students of the institution and members of Badalamenti’s family donning the Balenciaga designs, embodying the fusion of fashion, music, and homage. Moreover, this initiative serves as the announcement of a significant partnership between Balenciaga and the Manhattan School of Music, specifically with Dr. Reiko Fueting, head of the composition department. This partnership aims to uphold Badalamenti’s legacy through educational means, with the creation of a master class where students will compose original works inspired by the late composer’s style.
