Discover how sneakers evolved from utilitarian footwear to cultural icons

Over the years, sneakers have surpassed their utilitarian roots and have become cultural icons. This can highly be attributed to their appearance in music videos, movies, and even TV shows. All this has changed how we wear and view sneakers. Read on to find out some of the most iconic sneakers from movie screens!

  1. He Got Game (1998) – Air Jordans

The movie brings together cameos from a variety of shoes, but one stands out: the Air Jordan XIII. These shoes are worn by Denzel Washington’s Jake Shuttlesworth, making them even more popular. During this time, Spike Lee got access to the shoes months before they were released. If you had a chance to watch ‘He Got Game’ during its debut, there is a chance you were as curious as Jake Shuttlesworth to get your Air Jordans.

  1. Ride Along 2 (2013) – Nike Air Max

In the ‘Ride Along 2’ movie, Kevin Hart’s character Ben Barber wears Nike Air Max 1. The shoe is in a vibrant Jacquard bright magenta with an orange swoosh. Apart from his career as an actor and comedian, Kevin Hart is a huge advocate for a healthy and active lifestyle. He is among the first and only comedians to sign an endorsement deal with Nike. He has also worn other popular Nike shoes, including Nike Free Train Instinct ‘Hart’.

  1. Lost in Translation (2003) – Nike x HTM Air Wovens

While ‘Lost in Translation’ is not a fully focused sneaker movie, we have very notable scenes with the most iconic pairs. The first one is where Bill Murray’s Bob awaits Charlotte at the hospital. Viewers can see him wearing a colourful pair of Nike x HTM Air Wovens. This shoe is made from individual nylon strands on the top part and was designed by Mike Aveni in 2000. By then, they were the best basketball shoes but later got an advancement from Hiroshi Fujiwara in 2002 as part of Nike’s HTM series. Other modern remakes available include the 2017 model.

  1. Night Teeth (2021) – Nike Blazer

Even though it is a vampire movie, the stylists particularly chose the Nike Blazers. We see the sneakers worn by Benny, who is played by Jorge Landeborg Jr, the human protagonist in the movie. He mostly wears the classic white ones with a black Nike Swoosh. Since most of his outfits are monochromatic, they fit very well with the Nike Blazers.

  1. The Wolf of Wall Street (2013) – Nike Cortez

This crime comedy show has won the hearts of many viewers due to its memorable moments. Martin Scorcese tells the tale of what goes on in the stockbroking world shortly after Leonardo DiCaprio’s character, Jordan Belfort, shows up with a classic Nike Cortez. The shoe was first released in 1972 and was designed by Bill Bowerman, an Olympic training coach. Similarly to the car door mishap, we see DiCaprio stepping out in the Cortez, more composed than before.

  1. Back to the Future Part II (1989) – Nike Air Mag

Nike Air Mag stands out as one of the most innovative pairs in the movie world. The 1989 movie shows Marty McFly travelling to 2015, where he slops on a pair of self-lacing and futuristic Air Mags. These shoes have glowing LED panels and a metallic design, which is impressive for this century. Nike later made the shoes a reality and auctioned all pairs in a bid to raise money for Michael J. Fox’s Parkinson’s disease. Later, in 2016, they arrived in self-lacing tech and are a perfect way to complete your outfit.

  1. The Amazing Spider-Man (2012) – Nike Dunk

While Nike Dunks have been in the market for more than ten years, most people first saw them in the film ‘The Amazing Spider-Man’ back in 2012. The shoes were worn by Peter Parker, played by Andrew Garfield, and made him look cool. You only need to know how to style the sneakers and make a fashion statement.

  1. Air (2023) – Air Jordan I

The movie ‘Air’ gets a mention as it tells a story of how the first Air Jordan came into being. Ben Affleck is a Jordan fiend and is in the cast, which makes the movie exciting for sneakerheads. Air Jordan 1 was the first of its kind and has had other additions in the sequel.

 Final Thoughts

All the above moments offer a glimpse into the impact of sneakers on pop culture and street styles. These shoes have propelled athletes to superstardom and have defined characters in the films. For this reason, sneakers have risen to become more than just footwear. They are the perfect symbols of one’s style, identity, and changing cultures. Find what fits you best, and let it introduce you in any room.
