In an exclusive interview for DSCENE, CEO and Creative Director of Justin Alexander Signature, Justin Warshaw explains how he melded poetry with urban art, infusing graffiti elements into the collection to create a unique juxtaposition.
How does the “Verses in Contrast” collection reflect your vision for contemporary bridal couture?
“Verses in Contrast” presents a groundbreaking perspective on bridal fashion, demonstrating that the sanctity of marriage traditions and the vibrancy of modern innovation can not only coexist but also thrive together. This collection celebrates the timeless essence of love through the lens of contemporary artistry, appealing to those who dare to dream and love without boundaries. It caters to the bold, creative, and modern spirit in everyone, offering a fresh take on bridal fashion that pays homage to the past while fearlessly embracing the future.
What prompted the decision to collaborate with Sexsdreams?
I was captivated by Gioele’s work and loved the idea of a collaboration to introduce something different, out of the box and unexpected. This collaboration has a blend of tradition, individuality, and expression. In the previous FW24 season, our campaign theme, “The Art of Waiting,” conveyed a narrative through design. Now, we are taking it a step further by emphasizing art to express our industry stance.
What do you believe distinguishes Justin Alexander Signature as a brand?
Justin Alexander Signature redefines the essence of luxury and opulence in bridal – a testament to couture craftsmanship that transforms each gown into a sculptural masterpiece. Each piece is a visionary statement, reflecting a unique blend of sumptuous textures and exquisite finesse. We aim to appeal to individuals that are trendsetters, open to unconventional ideas but respectful of heritage. They seek unique expressions of love that resonate with their individuality and contemporary lifestyle. A Justin Alexander Signature bride pushes the boundaries of conventional bridal styling.
Do you have any guiding principles when conceptualizing new collections?
Our design team is trend-forward and data-driven. We use trunk shows and events to collect feedback on our newest designs by working directly with brides: Providing inspiration for future collection; ensuring our gowns flatter a wide variety of body shapes; and challenging ourselves to create for all women. We aim to strike a balance between fashion and wearability. Our goal is to craft designs that enable brides to authentically express their essence, seamlessly blending with their personal identity.
What were the challenges you encountered during the design phase?
Some of the challenges I’ve encountered included selecting the right dresses and fabrics that would work best with spray paint and trying to figure out the placement and graffiti designs that would merge our two brands. We also had to manipulate the graffiti illustrations for optimal placement on accessories. There was a risk that a misstep could damage a gown or require us to alter our plans, but Gioele spray paints with precision.
Could you share any memorable experiences or feedback from brides who have worn your designs?
The most memorable experiences are from trunk shows, when I’ve had the opportunity to meet the bride and her family, and hear the couple’s love story. Oftentimes, there will be touching and/or heartbreaking stories, and I love helping brides find joy during their dress search and help them feel spectacular on their special day.
In your opinion, what innovations should the bridal industry embrace to redefine the concept of marriage for today’s generation?
I think brides are seeking more personalization to make their gown unique to them. Dress customizations, embroideries, special accessories and more can help a bride achieve the look they envision. I think the perception of marriage is changing as there are less societal pressures than previous generations to marry versus live with a partner and have children. I think those that choose to marry hold the ritual in high esteem. The world continues to value experience more and more, and we as an industry have to help brides create incredible, out of this world, celebrations.
What can we expect to see from Justin Alexander Signature in the future?
Merchandise from the Justin Alexander Signature x Sexsdreams collaboration will soon debut on our new E-commerce platform, Justin Alexander Studio. This platform offers a comprehensive selection of sophisticated and luxurious products essential for all bridal occasions. We remain dedicated to pioneering innovation within bridal fashion, as seen in the upcoming collection. Expect to see fresh silhouettes, bold fabric choice, and intricate details that redefine bridal elegance.
Looking ahead, Justin Alexander Signature will continue to push boundaries by blending classic elements with contemporary flair. Embracing sustainability is also a priority, with a focus on eco-friendly fabrics and responsible production methods to minimize environmental impact.
