From Big Red Boots to Flipped Flop Heels: MSCHF Redefines Footwear Again

From quirky slides to statement heels, MSCHF's Flipped Flops push the boundaries of fashion

MSCHF, the Brooklyn-based art collective known for its disruptive and often controversial designs, has once again captured the spotlight with its latest release, the “Flipped Flop.” This innovative slide sandal-turned high heel demonstrates this brand’s talent for pushing boundaries and challenging the status quo. MSCHF has built a reputation for its audacious creations that blur the lines between fashion, art, and social commentary, and the Flipped Flop is an example of this ethos.

Founded in 2016, MSCHF has consistently sought to provoke and entertain through its wide range of projects. From viral digital pranks to subversive product designs, the collective’s work often serves as a critique of consumer culture and societal norms. Each project is crafted to spark conversation and elicit strong reactions, whether it be amusement, confusion, or outrage. This approach has positioned MSCHF as a unique and influential player in the contemporary cultural scene.

The Flipped Flop, modeled by the celebrity interviewer Bobbi Althoff, continues this tradition of provocation. Crafted from a single piece of rubber, the shoe’s warped sole curves into itself, creating a sculptural effect that is both visually striking and conceptually challenging. Adorned with twin “MSCHF Performance Sport” straps, fastened with a Velcro-like mechanism, the Flipped Flop transforms a familiar EVA athletic slide into an object of high fashion. This recontextualization of everyday items is a hallmark of MSCHF’s design philosophy.

According to MSCHF’s Chief Creative Officers Lukas Bentel and Kevin Wiesner, the Flipped Flop represents a distinct evolution in their design ethos. “The core of our process is simply that we design footwear that we think is interesting,” they explain. By taking a ubiquitous item and presenting it in an entirely new light, they aim to disrupt traditional notions of fashion and critique the homogeneity prevalent in consumer goods. “There are hundreds of variants made by every brand you can think of,” they say, “and they blur together into an archetype that we then use as a building block.”

The reception to the Flipped Flop has been predictably polarized, reactions range from fascination to outright dismissal. However, beyond these subjective opinions, the craftsmanship of the Flipped Flop is objectively noteworthy. The extensive experimentation required to achieve its unique shape ensures both stability and durability, resulting in a product that is both substantial and high quality. The challenges of crafting high heels from foam, given the traditional separation of flip flop and high heel manufacturing processes, underscore MSCHF’s innovative approach to production.

Culturally, the Flipped Flop serves as a commentary on the absurdity of fashion trends and the arbitrary nature of what is considered fashionable. By transforming a commonplace item into a luxury good, MSCHF invites us to question the value we place on certain aesthetics. The Flipped Flop operates as both a functional piece of footwear and an art object, provoking thought and conversation about the nature of fashion.

While the market for slides with heels may be niche, MSCHF thrives on challenging conventional tastes and pushing boundaries. The Flipped Flop, priced at $450, will be available on MSCHF’s website on July 30. Whether it becomes a wardrobe staple or a collector’s item, it will undoubtedly spark discussions and captivate the online community, reinforcing MSCHF’s reputation as a cultural provocateur.

In addition to the Flipped Flop, MSCHF continues to push the envelope with other projects, such as their upcoming limited edition drop of MSCHF Scout Cookies. This satirical release, inspired by Girl Scout cookies, includes three exclusive flavors—Treasury Mints, Caramel Cashouts, and Peanut Butter Profits—packaged with a distinctly nostalgic aesthetic. Accompanying the cookies are MSCHF Scout uniforms and a sales guide, offering a pointed commentary on American consumerism and the commercial grind. This drop, like the Flipped Flop, demonstrates MSCHF’s dedication to combining humor, criticism, and innovation in their creations.
