Chet Lo ’s SS25 collection, titled “Mai’s Blossom,” is a heartfelt tribute to his mother, Mai-Wah Cheung, a trailblazer in the fields of computer science, digital media, and later, art and education. Lo’s SS25 offering is more than just a fashion collection—it’s a narrative that intertwines his mother’s pioneering professional journey with her personal evolution, reflecting both her strength. Through this collection, Lo encapsulates the dualities of her life: from the high-powered world of technology to the quiet creativity of the art studio.

As one of the first women in computer science, Mai-Wah Cheung carved out a path in an industry dominated by men, eventually rising to become the Chief Information Officer at Univision. This trajectory of reinvention forms the backbone of the collection, offering an emotional depth to the designs, rooted in the experiences of a woman who defied conventions.

“Mai’s Blossom” reflects these shifts in life through a careful balance of structure and fluidity. Lo takes inspiration from the powerful office wardrobe of his mother’s corporate years, reimagining it with a modern sensibility. Silhouettes oscillate between sharp, tailored lines and soft, flowing fabrics, embodying the contrasting aspects of her professional discipline and her later creative freedom. It’s a collection that feels both powerful and delicate.

A standout motif in the collection is the “glitch” pattern, a nod to Mai-Wah’s expertise in the digital industry. This pattern appears throughout, both in printed and textural forms, serving as a visual metaphor for her career in technology. Paired with modern interpretations of plaid—another staple of her corporate attire—the collection juxtaposes digital precision with structured elegance. Adding a personal touch, Lo introduces fruit motifs inspired by his mother’s current passion for painting.

The color palette mirrors Mai-Wah’s journey, transitioning from deep, bold hues to softer, more serene tones. This shift represents her move from the high-intensity world of technology to the calm, introspective life of an artist. Textures further amplify this duality, with structured fabrics giving way to softer, more fluid materials, emphasizing the balance between strength and vulnerability. Each piece is a reflection of the complex layers that defined her life, from the corporate boardroom to the artist’s studio.

“Mai’s Blossom” is a moving tribute to a woman who has continuously evolved and reinvented herself. It’s a personal homage, woven into fabric, that celebrates not just his mother’s legacy but the broader power of transformation. In creating this collection, Lo has turned fashion into a medium for storytelling, honoring his mother’s remarkable life through each thoughtful design.
