Maria Grazia Chiuri’s Spring Summer 2025 Haute Couture collection for Dior is an exploration of sartorial memory and transformation. This collection draws deeply from fashion history while breaking free from the constraints of linear time. Chiuri’s approach is both imaginative and meticulous, fusing past inspirations with present that feels fluid and constantly evolving. Her reinterpretation of Dior’s archives is a deliberate disruption of expectations, using fashion as a medium to explore the boundaries of identity and emotion.
Central to the collection is Chiuri’s reinterpretation of Dior’s iconic Trapèze line, first conceived in 1958 by Yves Saint Laurent. This historical reference serves as a springboard for designs that feel simultaneously nostalgic and futuristic. The collection’s silhouettes – lace-trimmed tulle culottes, petal-like capes, and modern crinolines – embody contrasts. One moment, the garments echo the delicate fragility of childhood memories; the next, they exude a daring irreverence. A standout piece is the Cigale silhouette from Dior’s Autumn-Winter 1952-1953 collection, reimagined in moiré fabric with a little skirt and tailored tailcoat, amplifying proportion and texture.

The construction of each garment reveals Chiuri’s commitment to craftsmanship. Crinolines are modernized into movable sculptures, where embroidered branches seem to grow from the fabric itself. Bustiers, skirts, and blouses carry intricate floral embellishments, while capes crafted from organza feathers blend artistry with couture expertise. A black coat, simple yet commanding, highlights the choreography of fabric in motion. The collection crescendos with a burnished silver-embroidered gown that captures the essence of haute couture – a desire to create pieces that exist beyond temporal and stylistic constraints.

Complementing the collection is an artistic collaboration with Mumbai-born artist Rithika Merchant. Known for her botanical-inspired gouache, watercolor, and ink paintings, Merchant has created a series of nine large-scale artworks for Dior. These pieces, interpreted into textile panels by Karishma Swali and the artisans at Chanakya ateliers and the Chanakya School of Craft, explore themes of womanhood, ancestry, and transformation. Merchant’s works, steeped in mythological and literary references, feature organic forms and floral symbols that celebrate female energy and resilience.

The transformation of Merchant’s delicate brushstrokes into monumental textile creations exemplifies interdisciplinary mastery. The artisans employed an array of stitches, materials, and colors, bringing her imagery to life on an extraordinary scale. The result is an immersive visual experience that blends fine art and couture craftsmanship. Chiuri’s choice to feature this installation at the Rodin Museum underscores her dedication to elevating women artists while creating a dialogue between art and fashion.

Visitors to the Rodin Museum will have the chance to experience the full impact of this collaboration from January 28 to February 2, 2025. The exhibition offers a deeper connection to the Dior Spring Summer 2025 Couture Collection.
