Rosita Missoni, the co-founder of the iconic Missoni fashion brand, has passed away at the age of 93. Her journey in fashion began when she met her future husband, Ottavio Missoni, at the 1948 London Olympics, where he was a competitor. This encounter sparked a partnership that would not only lead to marriage but also to the creation of a globally recognized fashion dynasty.

Establishing their knitwear workshop in Gallarate, Italy, in 1953, the Missonis were pioneers in the industry, known for their revolutionary approach to textile patterns and design. Their signature zigzag patterns, which later became synonymous with the brand, emerged from their innovative use of Raschel machines. This distinct style was part of what Rosita referred to as living “life in color,” a philosophy that infused both their fashion and lifestyle brand.
The Missonis’ flair for vivid designs first caught international attention with a daring presentation at the Palazzo Pitti in 1967, where models walked the runway in sheer lamé tops without bras, a bold move that led to a temporary ban from the venue. Despite such controversies, Missoni’s influence only grew, supported by fashion luminaries like Diana Vreeland, who helped the brand gain a foothold in the U.S. market.

Beyond fashion, Rosita was instrumental in expanding the Missoni brand into the home decor space, launching Missoni Home in 1997 and later venturing into the hotel industry with a licensing agreement to develop Hotel Missoni. The brand’s aesthetic made its way into luxury hotels in Edinburgh, Dubai, and Kuwait, although this partnership eventually concluded, much to Rosita’s disappointment.
Throughout her life, Rosita remained deeply connected to her family’s roots in Sumirago, where she lived and worked. This connection to place and family was vital to her, both personally and professionally. Angela Missoni remains actively involved in the Missoni brand as the president. Her oversight continues to ensure that the family’s values and vision remain integral to the brand’s operations and creative direction.
