Wilson’s signature shoe returns in a pearl-inspired design shaped by memory

A’ja Wilson’s rise in professional basketball has been defined by control, strength, and consistency. Her first signature shoe with Nike reflects those same qualities – and on May 15, the A’One returns in a colorway shaped by personal history. The OG Pearl draws from Wilson’s own story, specifically a pearl necklace given to her by her grandmother. That gift became a symbol of strength and composure, and its influence is visible across the shoe’s materials and finishes. The OG Pearl is the third colorway in the A’One line, following the Pink A’ura debut in April. It releases alongside Indigo Girl, but carries a deeper personal narrative that distinguishes it within the growing series.

A Colorway with Personal Meaning

The design of the OG Pearl translates memory into structure. Its upper features mesh and synthetic layers in White, Off White, and Summit White, building subtle texture through tone alone. Reflective silver accents and an iridescent shank underfoot give the shoe its namesake luster, referencing the pearl necklace that inspired the look. This is a direct reference to the object Wilson describes as her “armor,” a symbol of resilience and calm in high-pressure environments.

Wilson’s personal imprint appears throughout the shoe. Her signature logo – based on the star she draws inside the “A” of her name – sits on the sneaker’s tongue. On the outsole, a quote from her grandmother reads: “As a matter of fact, the best is yet to come.” On the heel, Wilson’s own postgame words are printed: “Weakness, weakness. We don’t have time for that.” These elements frame the OG Pearl as both a performance tool and a statement of personal grounding.

Built for Versatile Play

Performance remains central to the A’ja Wilson sneakers. The shoe uses Cushlon 3.0 foam in the midsole, tuned to support explosive movement and recovery through consistent energy return. The foam compresses under impact but regains its shape quickly, helping with landings and transitions. Underneath, the outsole features a generative traction pattern that adapts to sharp cuts and pivots. Wilson’s game relies heavily on these motions, and the tooling was designed with that in mind from the start.

Additional features include a heel bump for lateral stability and a midfoot band that helps anchor the arch during multidirectional movement. Together, these elements offer control without sacrificing speed. Breathable mesh across the upper provides airflow, while internal padding locks in the fit. The shape stays close to the foot without limiting range, making it effective across different positions and play styles.

Wilson’s Role in the Design Process

The Nike A’One line is the result of a two-year development process led by Wilson and Nike designer Ben Nethongkome. From early sketch phases to material selections, Wilson was involved throughout. One of her goals was to create a shoe that could support her on the court, but also inspire confidence and control in players of all levels. That led to a build that balances pro-level performance with design details that carry emotional weight.

Wilson’s input extends beyond visuals. Her experience informed structural features like the midfoot band and outsole geometry. She also brought ideas forward from her own routines, including details inspired by quotes, symbols, and rituals that help her center before games. Inside the tongue, Celtic symbols reference her parents, anchoring the design in personal relationships that she considers essential to her success.

Youth Sizing and Launch Timing

The A’One OG Pearl will be available in women’s and youth sizes, with adult pairs priced at $110 and youth at $90. Offering the shoe in sizes as small as 1Y reflects Wilson’s stated goal: to give young players a shoe that connects them with performance, identity, and aspiration. The sizing and storytelling work in tandem – making the shoe accessible while embedding meaning into its design.

Wilson has spoken openly about her desire for her signature line to resonate across generations. That shows in the balance of function and emotion in the OG Pearl. The performance side delivers stability and speed; the design side roots those features in memories, relationships, and the mindset she brings into competition.

SNEAKERS

The A’One OG Pearl launches May 15 on Nike.com and through select retailers. It releases alongside the Indigo Girl colorway, rounding out the initial trio of A’One drops. The timing comes just ahead of the 2025 WNBA season, where Wilson will return to the court with the Las Vegas Aces.
