Tom Sachs and Nike have officially announced the release of the NikeCraft Mars Yard 3.0, arriving September 5 through a new, interactive launch format. Priced at $275 USD, the sneaker will be available via Tom Sachs’ webstore. Instead of a standard release, interested buyers must engage with the new I.S.R.U. (In-Situ Resource Utilization) app. This app introduces weekly challenges that allow users to earn points and move up a leaderboard. Those who reach a qualifying position on the leaderboard will gain the opportunity to purchase the NikeCraft Mars Yard 3.0.

Sachs explained the reasoning behind this approach, saying, “Mars Yards have always been hard to get, and they’re always going to be hard to get. If you want them, you’re going to have to work for them.” He emphasized that not every challenge will suit everyone, and that the real value lies in developing consistent and meaningful habits through participation.

The Mars Yard 3.0 continues the legacy of Sachs’ earlier models while bringing several updates in design and function. The sneaker keeps its familiar color blocking with off-white, golden brown, and red tones, but includes a few key differences. It features a new black TPU toecap, silkscreen-printed Swooshes, and “Sail” accents on the TPU heel clip and the natural rubber outsole.

The lacing system has also seen changes. The front pull tab now functions as a lace keeper, while the eyestay overlay has been separated into two pieces rather than connecting at the toe. Oversized eyelets and a staggered eyestay contribute to a more technical and adjustable fit. The laces are made from ribbed polyester, and the upper uses open mesh polyester for added breathability. A nylon strap at the heel allows for easier on-and-off wear.

Inside the shoe, Sachs includes two sockliner options. One is made of cork, while the other uses mesh. Both feature scientific-style drawings written in Sachs’ own handwriting, further tying the shoe to his design approach and aesthetic. These details give the Mars Yard 3.0 a distinctive identity while aligning with Sachs’ interest in functional design.

Beneath the foot, the sole unit features several changes. The midsole now includes polyurethane React foam, which sits above a carbon fiber plate. A new textured finish adds a subtle visual update while supporting overall comfort and performance.

Those who complete the I.S.R.U. challenges and reach the top of the leaderboard will have the chance to purchase the Mars Yard 3.0 directly through Sachs’ online platform. With its detailed upgrades and unconventional release method, this latest NikeCraft project stays in line with Sachs’ creative direction while pushing sneaker culture into new territory.
