The Kobe 8 Protro Shanghai Fireworks brings back a colorway that originally launched exclusively in China in 2013. The return carries its fireworks-inspired artwork into the Protro lineup, pairing the familiar orange palette with updated cushioning. This release gives the regional edition a wider launch, thirteen years after its debut during the original Kobe 8’s run.

Laser Orange and Safety Orange dominate the upper, with Cinnabar adding red tones to the printed design. Streaks of yellow, orange, and crimson depict an exploding fireworks display, covering the mesh with overlapping bursts of light. A black Swoosh cuts through the pattern along the side, and Kobe Bryant’s Sheath logo marks the tongue. The graphics establish the Shanghai reference that gives the colorway its name.

The Kobe 8 System first appeared in November 2012 as Bryant’s eighth Nike signature model. At its introduction, it was his lowest and lightest signature shoe. Engineered mesh made its Nike Basketball debut on the upper, providing breathability and flexibility, while synthetic overlays supported the toe and lateral quarter. A full-length Lunarlon midsole supplied the original cushioning system.
The model entered the Protro series in August 2023 with the “Halo” colorway, which honored Bryant’s birthday. Bryant coined Protro as an abbreviation of “performance retro,” a concept that updates existing basketball silhouettes for current play. For the Kobe 8, that process introduced Nike React cushioning and a revised herringbone traction pattern. Those changes established the platform behind the returning “Shanghai Fireworks” edition.

A Nike React foam insert provides cushioning underfoot in the 2026 release. The drop-in component fits within a Phylon foam carrier, updating the internal setup while retaining the shoe’s low profile. An orange midsole continues the upper’s palette, and a translucent rubber outsole completes the construction beneath it.
The synthetic and textile upper remains soft and pliable, wrapping the foot and conforming to its shape. Its lightweight construction supports the model’s close-fitting design, with the low-cut collar leaving the ankle exposed. Grippy rubber traction supports quick cuts and acceleration, carrying the Protro’s performance updates through to the outsole.
