Netflix has confirmed a global release date of January 16, 2026, for The Rip, a crime thriller that reunites Matt Damon and Ben Affleck on screen. The long-time collaborators star in and produce the project under their company Artists Equity, which they launched in 2022. Directed and written by Joe Carnahan, the film also credits Carnahan and Michael McGrale with the story, while Dani Bernfeld and Luciana Damon join Damon and Affleck on the production team. Kevin Halloran and Michael Joe serve as executive producers for Artists Equity.

The narrative follows a team of Miami police officers who stumble upon millions in cash hidden inside a derelict stash house. The discovery fractures their trust, as the weight of temptation and suspicion takes hold. As word spreads and outside forces close in, the team faces escalating pressure, forcing them to confront both their loyalty to one another and the reality of what greed can provoke. Netflix confirmed that the story draws inspiration from true events, grounding the thriller in a scenario where decisions carry irreversible consequences.
The film’s roots within Artists Equity underscore the company’s mission since its formation: to give creative talent stronger involvement in the production process. Damon reportedly discovered the script before sharing it with Affleck, who signed on after reading it. Their decision to move forward under their own banner reflects the control and vision they seek for their collaborative projects. With Carnahan directing, the project aligns with his track record of fast-paced, character-driven thrillers, positioning The Rip as a high-stakes narrative driven by moral conflict.

Netflix first teased the project in 2024 but held back details until early 2025. At a Netflix Special Presentation, Affleck described the project as “a really fun, engaging ride that keeps you guessing” while also calling it “a compelling, complicated human drama.” His comments framed the movie as both a suspense-driven thriller and an exploration of human behavior under pressure.

Damon and Affleck headline the cast, joined by Steven Yeun, Teyana Taylor, Sasha Calle, Catalina Sandino Moreno, Scott Adkins, and Kyle Chandler. Set against Miami’s charged environment, Carnahan’s direction shapes a narrative where trust disintegrates under the weight of temptation.
