Prada officially opened Milan Fashion Week with its Spring Summer 2027 womenswear show, where Miuccia Prada and Raf Simons concentrated the collection around a single garment: the skirt. The designers treated it as an object for continued experimentation, testing how construction, material, fastening and styling could alter a familiar form.

The collection follows a specific skirt language throughout. Its graphic, linear silhouette provides a fixed parameter, giving Prada a defined structure within which to examine numerous variations. The skirt can operate independently or in relation to surrounding garments, allowing each alteration to change how the complete look reads.
Function directly informs the collection’s aesthetic. Prada uses Velcro in contrasting colors as a base for crystal embroidery while retaining its practical use as a fastening. Wearers can adjust these closures to change a skirt’s shape and reveal or conceal embellishment. Enlarged metal snap fasteners appear as jeweled components. Crinoline leaves its usual internal location and enters the visible construction as a decorative layer or protective shell.
Fabric treatments further alter familiar associations. Prada translates industrial materials such as ciré matt and Re-Nylon into plissé, applying techniques commonly associated with different textiles. Cotton receives treatments that make its surface resemble leather or suede. Crystal constructions recreate the appearance of guipure lace in jewelry skirts, while floral prints appear on cotton and synthetic fabrics.
Pleating introduces another variation. One skirt extends beyond the body, leaving excess fabric untethered so the wearer holds part of the material in the hand. Other layered constructions use concealment and revelation to change the amount of surface, embellishment and structure visible at any given moment.
Prada also examines how surrounding garments affect the interpretation of the skirt. The designers treat individual pieces as fragments capable of changing the reading of a complete outfit. A sweater, shirt or bra top creates a different relationship with the same basic garment, allowing styling to alter proportion, association and visual effect.
Throughout Spring Summer 2027, Prada maintains strict parameters while repeatedly changing what happens inside them. The designers retain the skirt as their constant and redirect attention toward its fabric, construction, surface, fastening and relationship with the body. Familiar materials receive unexpected treatments, functional components enter decorative contexts, and internal structures become visible parts of the garment.
The collection ultimately asks how many forms one known object can assume. By restricting the starting point to the skirt, Miuccia Prada and Raf Simons examine the range of possibilities that can emerge from repeated study of a garment already embedded in everyday dress.
