Kanye West, now known as Ye, is returning to the runway. But should the fashion industry be so quick to welcome him back? Yeezy has announced Season 01, a new collection scheduled for November 4, 2026, at its recently established flagship store in Los Angeles. The presentation marks the brand’s first major runway show in more than four years, following a period defined by controversy, severed business relationships, and attempts to rebuild its commercial presence.

For a designer who once commanded considerable influence over contemporary fashion, the announcement would ordinarily generate excitement. Yeezy helped popularise an entire visual vocabulary of oversized silhouettes, muted colours, utilitarian clothing, and unconventional footwear. Its influence extended far beyond the runway, reaching mainstream retail and reshaping how fashion brands approached celebrity collaborations.
Yet the circumstances surrounding this return demand a different conversation.

Can Yeezy Simply Start Over?
The decision to call the collection Season 01 is particularly interesting. Yeezy previously presented nine numbered collections, with Season 9 taking place in Paris in October 2022. That presentation became controversial after models appeared wearing shirts bearing the slogan “White Lives Matter.” Ye subsequently made a series of antisemitic remarks that contributed to the collapse of his relationships with Adidas, Gap, Balenciaga, and other industry partners.
In January 2026, Ye issued a public apology for his antisemitic statements, acknowledging the damage caused by his behaviour. An apology deserves consideration, but it cannot automatically resolve years of public controversy or erase the consequences of his actions.
The new collection’s title suggests a fresh beginning, but fashion should question what that beginning actually means. Can a designer simply restart the numbering of his collections and expect the industry to approach his work without considering what came before?
And perhaps more importantly, what responsibility does the fashion industry have when deciding whom to support, promote, and celebrate?

The Fashion Industry Has a Short Memory
Fashion has always maintained a complicated relationship with controversy. Designers and celebrities frequently return to public prominence after periods of criticism, often supported by an industry that values cultural relevance, commercial potential, and publicity.
Ye’s situation presents a particularly difficult test because his previous actions involved explicit antisemitism and the promotion of hateful imagery.
The industry should be capable of recognising his past creative contributions while maintaining a critical position on his conduct. Acknowledging his influence on footwear and streetwear does not require treating his return as an uncomplicated success story.
There is also a difference between allowing someone to present a collection and actively celebrating their return. The first is an opportunity to demonstrate creative development. The second suggests an endorsement that should invite greater scrutiny.
Fashion publications, retailers, collaborators, and attendees will each make their own decisions about engaging with Yeezy. Those decisions communicate something about the values they are prepared to defend.

What Does Yeezy Have to Offer in 2026?
Beyond the controversy, another important question concerns the clothes themselves.
Yeezy’s original fashion collections arrived at a moment when the industry was increasingly interested in streetwear, sportswear, and minimalism. The brand developed an immediately recognisable aesthetic, supported by Ye’s cultural influence and the commercial success of his footwear collaborations.
The fashion environment of 2026 is considerably different. Independent labels, emerging designers, and established luxury houses have expanded upon many of the ideas Yeezy once helped popularise.
With the new collection still unseen, there is little basis for judging its creative direction. However, the question remains whether Ye can introduce a genuinely interesting design proposition or whether Season 01 will depend primarily on the publicity surrounding his return.
The choice to present the collection inside Yeezy’s own Los Angeles flagship suggests an interest in rebuilding the brand independently. That independence also places greater responsibility on Ye to demonstrate what Yeezy represents today.
A runway show can attract attention through spectacle and celebrity. Sustained relevance requires compelling design, a credible business structure, and an audience willing to engage with the product.

A Return That Deserves Scrutiny
Yeezy Season 01 will undoubtedly generate discussion, regardless of what appears on the runway. Ye remains a recognisable figure whose actions continue to attract significant public attention.
But attention should never be confused with creative achievement.
Fashion has an opportunity to approach this presentation with the critical distance that major cultural moments deserve. The clothes should be examined for their design, construction, originality, and relevance. The circumstances surrounding their presentation should receive equally serious consideration.
Ye has the opportunity to demonstrate that Yeezy has a meaningful future. Whether that future deserves the industry’s renewed support remains an open question.
The most important question surrounding Yeezy Season 01 may have little to do with what walks down the runway. It is whether fashion has learned anything from the events that brought the brand to this point.
