For its Spring 2024 collection, Theory Project under the helm of Lucas Ossendrijver, takes us into a realm where sensuality is made accessible, the quietude of American minimalism is celebrated, and designs are primed for movement. Ever since its debut in Fall 2022 for Theory, Ossendrijver has taken the pulse of New York into the fabric of the Theory Project collections. His exploration of the city’s dynamic has gone through the lens of technical innovation, athletic influences, and footwear adaptations aimed at complementing the NYs urban pace. This season, however, Theory Project sees a deliberate shift towards a more measured sentiment as he dissects and reinterprets the city’s vibrancy.

This change in rhythm is most vividly presented through a slew of sophisticated satin tops, dresses, and skirts, which are transformed by a singular, understated twist—capturing a moment from the design process. The sentiment of Ossendrijver’s design conviction shows that simplicity in innovation serves as the most authentic form of renewal for staple garments. This is exemplified by the introduction of a collarless wool-gabardine jacket, its silhouette reimagined with influences from the racer jacket, and a shirt jacket softened with darts and rounded sleeves. For the men’s line, the removal of a collar from a zip-up sweater, the addition of a contrast trim on a t-shirt, and refined stitching along the zipper of a lightweight nylon jacket extend the women’s collection’s polished aesthetics into menswear through sophisticated tailoring and harmonized jacket-pant sets, reminiscent of workwear.

Lucas Ossendrijver’s vision for Theory Project this season aligns seamlessly with the subtlety of American minimalism. He explains, “When there’s something easy, pared back, and sporty, that’s quite American to me. There’s depth and detail, but it’s hidden with a casual attitude.” This hidden craftsmanship shines through in pieces like the innovative dolman-meets-raglan sleeve of a washed nylon jacket, enabling unrestricted arm movement, and is echoed in a reversible men’s trench coat, a blouson jacket featuring a concealed hood, and garments designed with the notion of motion in mind. The reimagined pencil skirt with a trumpet hem anticipates the wearer’s stride, while a men’s jogger is designed with knee darts that contour to the leg’s bend.
