Gagosian Le Bourget Presents Major James Turrell Exhibition

Opening on October 14, Gagosian Le Bourget will unveil an expansive exhibition by renowned light artist James Turrell, marking his largest showcase in Europe in over two decades. The exhibition, titled At One, will feature more than 35 works, including installations, in-wall lightworks, projections, models, photographs, prints, a letterpress book, and archival materials. This landmark event highlights Turrell’s innovative exploration of light as a material and medium for altering perception.

Two new large-scale installations headline the exhibition: All Clear (2024), a Ganzfeld piece that immerses viewers in colored light to dissolve spatial boundaries, and Either Or (2024), a Wedgework installation where projected light interacts with reflective surfaces, pushing the limits of visual depth and dimension. These works exemplify Turrell’s ongoing fascination with perceptual phenomena, inviting viewers to experience light as both a tangible and ethereal presence.

Turrell, who began manipulating light in architectural spaces in the 1960s, continues to push the boundaries of human perception through his minimalist yet technologically advanced works. His pieces often evoke disorienting experiences akin to entering a cloud or diving into a deep void, as in All Clear, which creates a sensory environment without edges or depth cues, prompting a visceral encounter with light itself.

Complementing the main installations, the exhibition features the projection works Shanta, Red (1968) and Afrum Again (2024), as well as six new in-wall Glassworks pieces. Also on display are archival materials and models from Turrell’s monumental Roden Crater project in Arizona, a naked-eye observatory designed to connect viewers with the celestial movements of the sky.

James Turrell’s influential career spans more than five decades, with his work featured in prominent collections worldwide, including the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York and Tate Modern in London. His ability to manipulate light and space has positioned him as a pioneer in the field of perceptual art, with a legacy that continues to shape contemporary art discourse.
