VETEMENTS SS25 : Guram Gvasalia’s DIY Revolution

Amid economic downturn, the collection repurposes the old to challenge consumption-driven fashion norms

In a bold response to the mounting pressures on luxury fashion, VETEMENTS presented its SS25 collection, helmed by Guram Gvasalia. The collection emerges as a statement on the necessity to redefine fashion amid a global economic downturn and a growing consumer reluctance toward unchecked consumption. As traditional systems falter, VETEMENTS challenges the industry to reconsider the essence of luxury.

Set against the stark backdrop of a semi-abandoned mall, the runway itself was a metaphor for a decaying retail landscape. This setting amplified the collection’s ethos of “make new out of old,” where existing wardrobe staples are reworked to breathe new life into them. The brand envisions a future where consumers, disillusioned with relentless luxury spending, adopt a DIY mindset to create unique, conceptual pieces from remnants of the past.

The collection reflects a world where opulence has faded, and the grandiose past of luxury fashion stands bankrupt both financially and creatively. VETEMENTS confronts the notion that newness equates to superiority, advocating instead for the reclamation and rekindling of personal connection with one’s belongings. It’s a call to repurpose what’s left and find beauty in transformation.

Garments broke away from traditional luxury norms, showcasing deconstructed and reassembled designs that forge a new elegance from old foundations. Jackets were turned inside out, dresses were pieced together from mismatched fabrics, and accessories were crafted from unconventional materials. Each piece told a story of reinvention.

The DIY aesthetic was central to the collection, symbolizing an era marked by scarcity and ingenuity. Repurposed fabrics and raw, unfinished edges embraced imperfections, standing in stark contrast to the overproduced and polished luxury of yesterday.

With its SS25 collection, VETEMENTS advocates for a paradigm shift away from consumption-driven luxury. The brand invites consumers to reflect on the intrinsic value of their possessions, encouraging them to rework and repurpose items to create meaningful, personalized fashion narratives.
