PUMA continues its collaboration with French designer Louis Gabriel Nouchi through a new interpretation of the PUMA x LGN Mostro Mule. First introduced in 1999, the Mostro earned cult status for its unconventional design. Now, Nouchi returns to the silhouette and reshapes it with sharp focus and a contemporary instinct for form.
SNEAKERS
This second chapter in the collaboration strips the sneaker back to its essentials. Nouchi removes the back and introduces a slip-on structure, turning the silhouette into a streamlined mule. The shoe retains the defining feature of the original Mostro, its aggressive, spike-like texture, but applies it in a reworked format using a single rubberized material. The new edition arrives in two tonal colorways: a rich brown and a deep forest green.
The collaboration draws from the animal that inspired the PUMA name. Power and grace inform both the design process and the final product. This influence carries through the shoe’s sculpted profile, compact structure, and low-to-ground stance, all of which echo the tension and agility of a puma in motion.
Nouchi describes his process with precision: “I synthesized the essence of the iconic Mostro shoes into a radical mule design using a single material, transforming it into both a design object and a comfortable sneaker.” His approach reframes the mule as a hybrid form, part sneaker, part sculptural object.
The original PUMA Mostro drew from two distinct sources: vintage track spikes and old-school surf shoes. That dual influence gave the 1999 model its distinctive combination of performance references and unusual design language. By pulling those roots into a new silhouette, Nouchi not only preserves the Mostro’s character but sharpens its identity. This updated mule maintains the shoe’s visual intensity while pushing it into more unexpected territory.
Unlike typical lifestyle models, the Mostro Mule doesn’t settle into convention. Its backless construction, monochrome build, and textured sole separate it from both technical running shoes and standard slip-ons. Yet the fit stays functional. The shoe hugs the foot in a way that nods to both comfort and control, without excess.
Available from May 31, 2025, the new PUMA x LGN Mostro Mule will land at selected PUMA retailers. This release continues the dialogue between PUMA and Louis Gabriel Nouchi, with a design that strips back excess and focuses on raw form.
