Nike and Zellerfeld have teamed up once again, releasing a black version of the Air Max 1000 following the earlier “Oat” colorway. This black edition builds on the model’s experimental design, bringing 3D-printed texture to one of Nike’s most audacious silhouettes.

SNEAKERS

The Air Max 1000 already carries a reputation for excess. With exaggerated cushioning and a stacked profile, the original design gave Nike a template for pushing technical and visual boundaries. Zellerfeld uses that starting point to apply a completely new production method. Instead of working through traditional materials and stitched panels, the team builds the shoe entirely through 3D printing. This method gives the shoe a tactile quality that standard manufacturing doesn’t offer.

The “Black” version highlights that construction. Unlike the softer tones of the “Oat” colorway, this edition directs attention to the shoe’s surface. Web-like structures wrap around the upper, while angular forms define the midsole and heel. The layering and depth give the sneaker a carved-out effect, where every section feels shaped rather than assembled.

Zellerfeld uses the 3D-printed format not just for novelty, but for control. The process allows them to create exact surfaces, adjusting texture and flexibility by zone. That flexibility gives the Air Max 1000 an edge, letting Nike hold onto its signature Air cushioning while adapting it for a different material context.

This version drops in a limited run of 300 pairs, increasing demand and emphasizing the collaborative nature of the release. While the black colorway serves as the visual anchor, the real focus stays on construction. The intricate patterning, sharp lines, and unconventional volume show what becomes possible when production detaches from standard molds.

The launch also hints at how Nike might treat its archival designs in the future. Instead of simply reissuing classics, projects like this explore how technology can reframe familiar silhouettes. In that way, the Zellerfeld Air Max 1000 doesn’t work as a retro or a throwback. It stands as a test platform, one that shows where process can take design when freed from the usual constraints.

Zellerfeld and Nike plan to release the Air Max 1000 “Black” on August 19, through their respective channels. The pricing sits at $179 USD, placing the sneaker just above general Air Max models, but below premium-tier releases.
