Universal Pictures has placed Sabrina Carpenter at the center of its next major musical, giving the pop star her first studio lead role and a producer credit on an untitled feature inspired by Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. The project marks a decisive shift in Carpenter’s career, bringing her into a new phase in which she shapes both performance and production on a large-scale film.

Carpenter reportedly pitched the concept to Universal more than a year ago, setting the foundation for a project that reflects her vision from the earliest stages. The studio has paired her with writer-director Lorene Scafaria, a two-time Emmy nominee known for Hustlers and key episodes of Succession. Scafaria’s involvement positions the film within a confident creative framework, one capable of handling the surreal and unpredictable character of Carroll’s source material. Producer Marc Platt, whose filmography includes major musical releases, joins Carpenter on the production team. Alloy Entertainment’s Leslie Morgenstein and Elysa Koplovitz Dutton will also produce.
The film draws from the public-domain novel rather than the familiar Disney versions, allowing the team to shape a contemporary vision that moves away from previous interpretations. The project aims to build an updated narrative structure, using the whimsical and chaotic world as a foundation for a modern musical. With Carpenter contributing creatively as both star and producer, the project aligns closely with her growing influence in the wider entertainment industry. Production is expected to begin soon, placing the film firmly within Universal’s pipeline of large-format musical projects.

Carpenter steps into this role during a period of significant momentum in her music career. She released her album Man’s Best Friend in September and entered the upcoming 2026 Grammy Awards with six nominations. Her track “Manchild” earned a nomination for Song of the Year, marking her second appearance in that category. She shares the nomination with co-writer Jack Antonoff, continuing a collaboration that has elevated her presence in the pop landscape.
As plot details remain under wraps, the project builds anticipation through its team and its timing. Universal positions Carpenter as both performer and decision-maker, placing her at the center of a major studio release as her musical achievements continue to gain recognition.
