MUBI has released the new trailer for No Other Choice, Park Chan-wook’s sharp, darkly comic thriller. The release comes after the film’s world premiere at the Venice Film Festival and its UK premiere at the London Film Festival, extending Park’s established presence on major festival stages.

No Other Choice centers on Man-su, played by Lee Byung Hun, a specialist in paper manufacturing who has spent twenty-five years building a structured and confident life. He lives with his wife Miri, their two children, and two dogs. His routine gives him assurance, and he believes he has secured everything he once hoped for. That stability collapses the moment his company informs him that he has been fired. The shock overwhelms him, and he vows to regain control by finding a new job within three months.
His resolve proves difficult to maintain. One failed interview follows another. He spends more than a year drifting between short-term work and fruitless applications. His situation grows increasingly unstable, and he faces the possibility of losing the house he worked so hard to buy. Driven by desperation, Man-su approaches Moon Paper, a company he knows well. Line manager Sun-chul humiliates him and dismisses his attempt to submit a CV. Man-su believes he is qualified, and when he sees no opportunity available, he forms a clear decision: “If there is no opening for me, I’ll just have to get hired by creating one. I have no other choice.”
Park Chan-wook uses this premise to examine a man pulled into a crisis that reshapes his identity. Known for work that includes Oldboy, Thirst, The Handmaiden, and Decision to Leave, Park approaches this film with a different tone. He focuses on the pressure of unemployment and the psychological spiral that follows. As Man-su pushes toward extreme measures, Park builds tension through the character’s shifting inner state and the moral uncertainty that grows around him.
The cast strengthens the emotional scale of the film. Son Ye-jin plays Miri, who supports her husband while dealing with the reality of their changing life. Park Hee Soon appears as Sun-chul, a line manager whose moods shift quickly and create unpredictable turns in the narrative. Lee Sung Min plays Bummo, a veteran of the same industry who faces his own decline and emotional strain. Yeom Hye Ran appears as Ara, who struggles with the distance that has developed between her and her husband. Cha Seung Won gives Sijo a quiet emotional weight as a man working to support his family under mounting pressure. Yoo Yeon-seok also joins the ensemble, contributing to the film’s layered dynamics.
Park builds tension through the connections and conflicts among these characters. Their overlapping ambitions and fears create a network of pressure that intensifies as the story moves forward. Each character operates from a place shaped by work, pride, and survival, and their interactions push the drama toward unpredictable turns. No Other Choice arrives in UK and Irish cinemas on 23 January 2026.
