Flageollet is no ordinary watchmaker. He’s the co-founder of De Bethune, a figure so revered and selective that collaborations with him occur only “when vision, values, and timing align.” His obsession with precision chronometry and material science has produced some of the most technically audacious timepieces of the 21st century. That he agreed to this partnership speaks to something deeper than commerce, it speaks to shared philosophy.
“We talked a lot about watchmaking and found common ground in the pieces we appreciate,” Flageollet recalls. “I realised we spoke the same language and shared a strong sense of responsibility towards the craft, and its preservation.”
This mutual respect manifested in a five-year development journey, code-named “Phase 3,” resulting in what may be the most ambitious horological project either house has undertaken.
Sympathique: Resurrecting an 18th-Century Marvel
At the heart of this collaboration lies the Sympathique, a mechanism first conceived by Abraham-Louis Breguet in 1795. The original concept was elegant in its ambition: a master clock that would automatically wind and synchronize a portable pocket watch overnight, delivering it fully reset by morning.
Only five such clocks were made during Breguet’s lifetime. The idea has haunted watchmakers ever since.
Flageollet was among the first to successfully revisit the concept in the early 1990s, transforming the original pocket watch into a tourbillon wristwatch. Now, three decades later, he and Louis Vuitton have pushed the boundaries further still.
The LVDB-03 Sympathique Louis Varius clock is a monument to mechanical ingenuity. Its key-wound movement comprises 763 components, two large barrels, and a remontoir d’égalité, delivering an 11-day power reserve. But the true magic lies in its docking interface, concealed beneath a rose gold dome engraved with the constellation of Hercules (a nod to Louis Vuitton’s founder’s astrological sign).

Every two hours, a dedicated mechanism resets the display to match the master clock. Platinum lugs provide brilliant contrast, their hand-polished surfaces and laser bead-blasted interiors demonstrating the obsessive attention to detail that defines both houses.

De Bethune’s signature celestial language, the Milky Way motif, has been reinterpreted for Louis Vuitton. White-gold pins are individually set by hand into micro-perforations of varying sizes, creating depth and luminosity across the surface. Fine gold leaf is applied by decorative artisans at the De Bethune workshops. And hidden within this constellation, the letters “LV” emerge, a defining signature integrated into the stars themselves.
A spherical day-and-night indicator, crafted in 5N rose gold and flame-blued steel, completes two full rotations every 24 hours. The deep blue of the night indicator is achieved using a traditional alcohol lamp, a technique that connects this thoroughly modern watch to centuries of artisanal tradition.

Drawing inspiration from early 19th-century dioramas, Schuiten created three landscapes featuring immersive scenes of exploration: a steam train barreling across a viaduct, hot air balloons floating above the African savanna, sherpas ascending steep mountains.

These miniature worlds encircle the mechanism and rotate slowly, creating a perpetually evolving dreamscape. Time, the clock suggests, is not linear but circular, cyclical, surreal, and sublime. Each moment of the day tells a unique story.
To fashion these intricate illustrations on three separate 5N rose gold rings, master engraver Michèle Rothen sculpted over one meter of hand-engraved surface using traditional burin and chisel. The results rival the decorative clocks of the Late Renaissance.
The clock itself is anchored to a titanium base decorated with a marquetry of blued meteorite, material that has traveled through space before finding its place in this earthbound masterpiece. It can be set in multiple orientations, a reference to the adjustable presentation of historical marine chronometers.
The Trunks: Because Presentation Is Everything
Louis Vuitton understands that objects of this magnitude demand appropriate vessels. Two distinct types of exceptional trunks have been crafted for the project.
For the Sympathique clock, a trunk inspired by Louis Vuitton’s emblematic Trophy Trunks has been designed in polished titanium, among the most exclusive objects ever produced by the Louis Vuitton Asnières ateliers. Titanium corner protectors, heat-blued by De Bethune, articulate the structure, while palladium lozines punctuate the exterior with measured restraint.
