Netflix expands its lineup of Korean romantic comedies with Boyfriend on Demand, a series that places BLACKPINK member and actor Kim Ji-soo at the center of a story that explores love in the age of digital fantasy. The drama presents Jisoo as Seo Mi-rae, a webtoon producer whose demanding schedule leaves little room for personal life. When a virtual dating platform enters her routine, Mi-rae begins to experience a series of romantic adventures that challenge the way she thinks about relationships.

TV

Directed by Kim Jung-sik, known for Strong Girl Nam-soon, the series blends romantic comedy with elements of virtual reality storytelling. Alongside Jisoo, the cast includes Seo In-guk as Park Kyeong-nam, as well as Yoo In-na and Ha Young. The series introduces a rotating lineup of actors portraying Mi-rae’s digital partners, expanding the romantic possibilities of the story.

At the start of the series, Mi-rae views dating as an exhausting extension of an already overwhelming life. As a webtoon producer, she spends long hours managing deadlines and creative demands. When her rare free time arrives, she prefers simple comforts over awkward first dates. That outlook changes once she discovers Boyfriend on Demand, a virtual subscription service that allows users to experience immersive romantic scenarios.

Inside this digital environment, Mi-rae encounters a variety of carefully constructed love stories. Each scenario places her in a different fantasy, from secret agent adventures to historical romance set during the Joseon era. Other moments play with classic romantic tropes such as unexpected midair meet-cutes or idealized encounters designed to spark emotional excitement. Through these virtual experiences, Mi-rae reconnects with the thrill of falling in love.

While the virtual romances unfold, Mi-rae’s real life introduces another possibility. Her latest work assignment forces her to collaborate closely with producer Park Kyeong-nam, played by Seo In-guk. At first, Kyeong-nam appears distant and difficult, and the two clash regularly in the office. As the series progresses, however, Mi-rae begins to see a different side of him, one that reveals patience, vulnerability, and unexpected warmth.

This contrast between digital fantasy and everyday reality drives the emotional core of the show. The perfect relationships offered by the virtual service provide immediate excitement and flawless scenarios. Real life, on the other hand, introduces imperfections, misunderstandings, and gradual emotional discovery. Mi-rae must decide whether the idealized romance of the virtual world can truly compete with the unpredictability of genuine connection.

Jisoo describes the series as a story about personal growth as much as romance. Mi-rae searches for the emotional excitement that love can bring, yet struggles with the effort that real relationships require. Through her journey, the character begins to reconsider what she wants from intimacy and connection.

Now streaming on Netflix, Boyfriend on Demand combines romantic comedy with speculative storytelling about technology and relationships. The series uses virtual dating as a playful narrative device while raising a familiar question about modern romance. When given the choice between a perfect illusion and a complicated reality, which one feels more meaningful?
