Saulnier returns to suspense-driven filmmaking following his 2024 Netflix action thriller Rebel Ridge, which starred Aaron Pierre. His previous films, including Green Room and Hold the Dark, explored violence through increasingly dangerous situations. Slayground takes that approach into Halloween horror, introducing a setting where staged scares and actual killings occupy the same space.
The story follows Michael “Metal Mike” Graves, a scare actor working at a haunted attraction. He regains consciousness among the bodies of his colleagues, unable to remember how they died or what role he may have played. Authorities begin searching for him across the state as he attempts to reconstruct the events surrounding the massacre.
The central mystery places Michael under suspicion from the beginning. His missing memories complicate his attempts to establish what happened, while the investigation gradually connects the killings to the surrounding community’s troubled history. The possibility of his own involvement adds another threat to an already dangerous situation.
The new teaser introduces the attraction’s disturbing atmosphere through masked figures, Halloween imagery, and glimpses of violence. Its presentation draws attention to the uncertainty surrounding Michael’s situation, leaving the audience to question what happened inside the attraction and who may have survived. Saulnier uses the setting to develop a story that combines the pursuit of a fugitive with the conventions of a slasher film.

Alongside Smith, the ensemble includes Chase Sui Wonders, Sophie Wilde, Imogen Poots, Young Mazino, Stanley Simons, Matty Matheson, James Badge Dale, and Stephen Root. The film also reunites Saulnier with Poots, who appeared in Green Room, and Badge Dale, who worked with the director on Hold the Dark.
Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross provide the film’s score, adding another creative collaboration to the production. Saulnier handles both the screenplay and direction, continuing his work with stories that place characters under extreme psychological and physical pressure.
Although Slayground takes place during the Halloween season, A24 has scheduled its theatrical release for January 29, 2027, in the United States. The newly released teaser introduces the film’s central questions ahead of that date, with Michael’s forgotten actions holding the key to the mystery
