Rihanna wears ©Alaia

The 2023 Academy Awards honored the year’s best film performances, but the red carpet beforehand saw actors deliver their best fashion performances, capping off a thrilling awards season with their best ensembles. Many of the celebrities chose designs that juxtaposed the traditional and the contemporary, resulting in looks that felt both familiar, glamorous and glitzy, and completely new. White was the standout color of the evening, with stars favoring minimalist and classic designs updated with a modern twist. Although white dominated the now champagne colored carpet, bold colors also made their appearance on the biggest award night. Our personal favorite was Rihanna, who showed her baby bump in a custom Alaïa dress designed by Pieter Mullier.

STYLE

Angela Bassett wears ©Moschino

Nominated for the Best Supporting Actress, Angela Bassett surprised in a vibrant Moschino custom ultraviolet organza hand-draped gown with exaggerated bow neckline.

Tems wears ©Lever Couture

Tems donned a Lever Couture outfit that swirled around her like a trail of smoke, a more avant-garde variation of the hooded gown. With its tulle stroking her face, shoulders, and hair like a kind hug, her dress was one that looked finest from all perspectives.

Haris Dickinson wears ©Ferragamo

Haris Dickinson chose a black Ferragamo tuxedo jacket with silk peak-lapels and matching flat front tailored trousers, paired with a white shirt in compact cotton popeline, black tie, and black calf leather shoes from the Spring Summer 2023 runway show, which marked the debut of Maximilian Davis as Creative Director of the maison.

Lady Gaga wears ©Versace

Lady Gaga stunned at the Oscars in a Versace dress coming straight off the Fall Winter 2023.24 show held last week in Los Angeles. Although Gaga’s red-carpet antics are generally performance art, it was nice to see her in an outfit that spoke for itself.

Ariana DeBose wears ©Versace

Ariana DeBose wore a custom-made Atelier Versace gown crafted in a gray pearl-draped silk cady and features embroidered motifs inspired by the Art Deco movement. The floor-length gown is finished with a plunging V-neckline, open back, high-leg slit, and tulle sleeves with embroidered motifs in a play on transparencies.

Cara Delevingne wears ©Elie Saab

Cara Delevingne stood out in an Elie Saab deep passionate crimson whereas the majority of visitors chose white or black this year. Although the rose accent on her shoulder is large, it doesn’t overshadow the look like other flowery embellishments often do. Her dress is also draped in a way that makes me think of the dramatic curtains that part during a play to highlight the woman’s leg in the limelight.

Cate Blanchett wears ©Louis Vuitton

Everyone was expecting Cate Blanchett, who has done it for years (and particularly regularly on the red carpet), to reuse a dress from a prior ceremony. The top itself is an archival piece, and she maintained the outfit environmentally friendly by wearing a skirt made of sustainable silk, despite the fact that she didn’t search through her own personal archive for this statuesque Louis Vuitton ensemble. The expression encircled her body like a swath of silky liquid and was frozen in time as it moved.

Danai Gurira wears ©Jason Wu

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever star Danai Gurira chose a classic and elegant black Jason Wu gown which featured a corset-like top and full A line skirt, which she updated with a captivating hairdo and Messika jewelry.

Jay Ellis wears ©Fendi

Top Gun: Maverick star Jay Ellis opted for a Fendi black tux updated with satin collar and beads as well as Christian Louboutin shoes and Cartier watch.

Emily Blunt wears ©Valentino

Emily Blunt matched the form-fitting, off-the-shoulder Valentino dress with a white clutch that was adorned with pearls and a silver appliqué to keep the outfit monochrome. She added hanging, embellished earrings to her stylish updo of backswept hair.

Jessica Chastain wears ©Gucci

The Oscar winner Jessica Chastain attended the Oscars in a plunging Gucci gown. In her gorgeous outfit, Chastain shone like a diamond, grabbing everyone’s attention on the champagne-colored carpet. The A-lister beamed for the cameras as she let her majestic black train cascade behind her.

Florence Pugh wears ©Valentino

On the red carpet for the 2023 Oscars, Florence Pugh stunned in one of her most stunning ensembles to date, donning a pair of shorts and a Valentino gown top.

Jessie Buckley wears ©Rodarte

Jessie Buckley brought drama to the champagne carpet with Rodarte’s Fall Winter 2023 purple and gold hand beaded metallic lace gown for the 95th Academy Awards.

Paul Mescal wears ©Gucci

Paul Mescal was dressed in a Gucci costume and a sweet red-pinned rosette for the 95th annual Academy Awards on Sunday night, bringing nostalgic silhouettes.

Fan Bingbing wearing ©Tony Ward

Chinese actress Fan Bingbing made a grand entrance on the white carpet, wearing a stunning Tony Ward creation from his Couture Spring Summer 2023 collection that is sure to inspire fashion enthusiasts around the world. Fan Bingbing’s dress was a hand-embroidered silver Charleston dress with a taffeta green overskirt and sumptuous sleeves, perfectly capturing the essence of classic Hollywood glamour with a modern and unique twist.
